Othello

Today, let's analyze Othello's characters a bit.

1. What do you think of Othello (the character)? Is he noble, loyal, and courageous? How does he fit of the mold of being a tragic hero? Or, do you think he doesn't fit the tragic hero mold? Explain. What do you think it says about Othello that he is easily misled by Iago?

2. What are your thoughts on Desdemona's character? Do you think it's unrealistic that a young woman would run away with a much older, more experienced man - especially a man of a different race? Do you think her father was wise in cautioning Othello to watch her closely? Do you think that their marriage would have been a happy one if Iago wasn't "all up in their bidness"?

3. What about Roderigo? Who do you think he is a foil for in the play?

4. Cassio is considered a worthy gentleman. Do you think he is?

5. Finally, Iago...ah, Iago. Why do you think he's so bitter? What do you think he is trying to accomplish by harming everyone is his path?

Lastly, let's talk about theme. One of the themes of the play is jealousy. So far, who is the most jealous character of all?

I look forward to reading your comments and questions!

  1. So far I like Othello. He seems noble, but maybe a little (a lot) naïve. Naïve in the since that he doesn't see Iago's evilness (Iago trying to get both Cassio and Roderigo to break Desdemona and Othello up).

I think that Desdemona fell in love with Othello because of his life story of overcoming slavery; not because of his age,"experience," or RACE. I think that thier marriage could have been very happy if her father wasn't such a racist and Iago wasn't such a jealous meanie(yeah, a MEANIE).

At some points in the play I feel bad for Roderigo because he loves Desdemona, but most of the time I wish he would just go away and stop ruining everything.

Cassio seems like a respectful gentlemen, but I still don't like that an "emotional affiar" is normal(that just seems strange).

I think Iago should focus on his own marriage, and stop trying to mess up Othello and Desdemona's love. Iago=MEANIE...That is all I have to say.

Jealousy. I think that there is a lot of jealousy in this play. Roderigo is jealous because he wants Desdemona, Brabantio is jealous because Desdemona "chose" Othello, but mostly Iago. He is jealous of Cassio, and he thinks everyone is "getting it on" with his wife. Also, Iago uses jealousy in his evil scemes. He tries to ruin those he is jealous of (Cassio)and he uses jealousy to try to break up Desdemona and Othello.

  2. Hmmm...Danielle...do you think that Iago is a MEANIE?! :-)

I just don't understand why everyone trusts him so much. You'd think at some point in time, people would start to wise up about him.

  3. 1. Othello is a good guy. I think that he fits the mold of a tragic hero in a way. His flaw is that he puts too much trust in people.
    2. I think that it's just fine that Othello and Desdemona are married. They would be just fine together if everyone else would leave them and their happy marriage alone.
    3. Well I don't really know what a foil is, but I think that Mister Rod should just get over his crush and realize that they're married. He needs to find another woman.
    4. I like Cassio. He's cool, and everyone makes mistakes, including him. I feel bad for him because Iago is just using him and he doesn't even know it.
    5. I DO NOT LIKE Iago. I like how Danielle put it - he's a meanie. He isn't satisfied with his own life so he's gotta try and ruin everyone else's. He's jealous, and he should keep his green-eyed monster inside his own life, and not unleash it to create chaos in everyone else's.

Iago is definately the most jealous in the play so far. He's dumb. Grrr, I dislike him so much. :(

  4. I also dislike how we have to type what we think the little squiggly word says before our comments can go up. Or is it just me?

    Have a fun weekend, peeps!

  6. Before I can post a comment, I have to type what the colored squiggly word says. It's really weird. Am I the only one that has to do that? :(

  7. Amanda;

I have to do that, too. I think it's a safety precaution so that spammers don't jam up our blog.
