New Year/New College Prep

Good morning, everyone! Welcome back to school. I know how excited you are to be back ;-) I hope that you all had a very relaxing break because I plan on hitting the papers hard and fast from here on out.

Since it's the start of the new year, I would like us to now post all our journals entries on the blog. I will expect you to post a comment/question/journal response at least three times per week. You definitely may do more if you'd like. I will check the blog daily, but I will give points on Sunday night after six. Therefore, be sure that you have your third post posted by then. I will count one post per day; but again, you may comment more than that per day if you'd like.

Today's journal: Hollywood uses literature all the time for inspiration. What is the best movie that you've seen that's been inspired by a book? How closely did the movie follow the book's plot? What didn't you like about the movie that you did like about the book? What didn't you like about the book that you did like about the movie?

Post away!

  1. I think the best movies I have seen that were books turned movies would have to be Pride and Prejudice and The Other Boleyn Girl. I enjoyed both movies which made me want to read the books. I like that I kind of knew the story before I started I get started reading it because I get too confused if I can't put a face with a characters name.

  2. I think that one of the best movies that have ever been made from a book is Anna Karenina, the 1997 version. After reading all 800 pages, it was worth it to watch the story fold out on screen. I thought that the movie was pretty close to the book's plot, but there was a lot that was left out (you cannot put all 800 pages into the film). I really liked the movie, but not quite as much as the book. The movies are never as good because parts get left out.

  3. One more thing.
The movie was good because there were faces with names. In the book, each character had several names (for example one character may have the names Vronsky, Alyosha,or Alexei)and it was very confusing.

  4. I read the book the longest winter Alex Kershaw. As POWs of war, the soldiers expierence first hand the hellish captivity environments and write a book telling there story. There is a movie series Band of Brothers that has a part of this book in it. The book was way better at explaining who all the men were and how they had gotten to where they were. as for the violence, that was way better in the movie; espicially with sony digital surround sound!!

  5. David; HAHA to the correction "their." I laughed out loud.

Danielle; I would agree with Pride and Prejudice.

Rachael; Anna Karenina is one of my favorite books. I love the old version of the movie (1930s or 40s) which starred Greta Garbo.

One of my favorite books to movies is Wuthering Heights - again the old 1930s movie starring Laurence Olivier as Heathcliff. Awesome!

  6. My favorite would have to be My Sister's Keeper. There were a lot of differences between the book and the movie. They made some of the characters not as important, left out some characters completely, and to top it off the endings were totally different! I can't say that I really "liked" how either of them ended, but if I had to choose, I would pick the book ending because it was something that you didn't think was going to happen. Also, once you read the book, all the other little differences between the book and movie were kind of annoying. I wish they would have stuck more to how the book was written.

  7. Bad question! I don't think I've ever read a book and seen its movie. It's pathetic, I know. I'm certainly not going to read Harry Potter, Twightlight, Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, My Sister's Keeper, or any of that garbage, and I've never heard of most of the stuff people are commenting on.
Anyway, I'll write on the free write about our Christmas Break, which was on the board this afternoon. My Christmas break was awesome! I had a lot of fun hanging out with friends and family, playing basketball, and just doing what I wanted to do for once. I needed that break from school really bad and now I'm ready to glide through the rest of the year. I also got the most amazing gift ever. It is a computer program used to write music called "Finale Song Writer". I highly recommend it.

  8. I think that the best movie and book combination that I have read and seen would have to be The Sisterhood of The Traveling Pants. It is a very big chick flick (so Nathan I wouldn't expect you to read it or watch the movie). =) There are a lot of differences between the book and the movie. For example, in the book Lena's sister went to Greece with her and in the movie Lena went by herself. I enjoyed both the book and the movie, although I did tend to like the story outline of the movie better because I didn't like the fact that in the book Lena's sister went to Greece with her because it ruins the whole love story! Other than that both were pretty great.

  9. The best movie i have ever seen that's been inspired by a book would have to be The Wizard of Oz. The Wizard of Oz is by far my favorite movie and one of my favorite books. There are differences between the book and the movie they are not major. I honestly have to say i like the movie and book just the way they are. I really wouldn't want to add anything to either one. In the movie Dorothy ends up just having a dream, so in return the movie is realistic even though there is an imaginary world with talking lions, scarecrows and a tin man. The book on the other hand is more of a fairytale because it isn't based on a dream it actually happened. But i highly recommend both of them!!!

  10. OK I have a question is POWs of war being redundant, Big Papa?

And, I agree with you Hadra that the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants and the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2 are really awesome movies and books. However Hadra, you might want to rethink the whole " so Nathan I wouldn't expect you to read it or watch the movie" because on New Years he was the one who picked out the movie. What movie did he pick out? Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2. Seriously!

So Nathan, you can't call it garbage because you are the one who wanted to watch it and you quite enjoyed it too!

  11. Mrs. Myers, i have a tip for you. Laugh out loud can also be spelled "lol" - just for future reference :) haha

Danielle "POW" means "Power Over Women".. duh.. Guys rule! it's just the way it is so it's not redundant.

  12. I'd have to say the best movie I've seen that's been inspired by a book would be "October Sky." It was based off the "Rocket Boys" novel by Homer Hickam. In the coal mines of West Virginia, Homer and his friends make history in this inspiring true story. The movie did the best it could in following the book. There wasn't too many differences. I liked them both.

  13. NATHAN!!!! I've read all the books that you were calling garbage, and they are certainly not. I liked them. And they all made good movies. I love Harry Potter, but the movies leave out a lot of information. I agree with Emma - I liked My Sister's Keeper, but the ending was opposite! I pretty much like all books and movies, sooooo... yea I guess I just like them.

P.S. Danielle, you go girl! Nathan totally picked out that movie - not us!

  14. Ummm...David... Power over women?!! I think you need to rethink that statement because I know of at least one woman who has power over you...and your grade... ;-)

  15. Wow go Mrs. Myers! David, I think women will always have a little bit of power over men. Men definately do not rule the world although they sometimes think they do. Oh, thank you for telling me that Danielle and Amanda =). Nathan I think you are losing this fight =). We have proof that you picked out the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants movie at Danielle's house from two people!
