Philosophy

How do you know that the things you know are true? What is more real: sadness or a puppy? Are you sure that you're not in someone else's dream - that this life isn't real, but just someone's dream? Who decides what is right and what is wrong, moral or immoral? Who gave "them" that power? Do we have the right to take that power away from "them" and decide for ourselves?

Discuss!

  1. I guess you never really know if the things I know is true. I think it just makes sense to me so I just believe it. I don't think that anyone has the power to say what is right and wrong for every single person. I don't think we could give one person that power for everyone. For me it would be god who knows what's right and wrong, but I can't say that God says what is right and wrong for all the all religons in the world.

  2. Nobody knows for absolute certainty the things they know (I assume you're talking about religion, knowlege, history, etc.) are true. Unless I've seen something with my own two eyes or if I understand it, I have a lot of doubts. The definition of true is "what's real" so only the obvious things we use and see and what has been scientifically established are true without a doubt. That is probably why I like math and science; because they try to seek truth. There is still a lot out there to be discovered too. Overall, however, there is no way of knowing truth for certain when it comes to people lying or saying false things, history (unless it has been proven with scientific evidence), or religion. I don't honestly know if "what I know" is really true as far as those things. Oh, and a puppy is much more real than sadness.

As far as me being someone elses dream, that's obviously not true because I can think for myself. We, as humans, are intelligent beings. We invented the word "dream" and we are the ones who experience them. We are very real; we're not just someones dream.

As far as right and wrong, there are many things that help people decide what's right and wrong and moral or immoral, but in the end each person decides for themselves. Religion, government, and other organizations tell us what's right and wrong but we have to ultimately decide for ourselves.

  3. Um, I agree with both Alexa and Nathan. Nobody truly ever knows if what they know is true. It is just kind of a gut feeling I guess, at least that is how it is with me. If i have a feeling it is right or true than that is what I believe. I think that a puppy and sadness are both equal in "realness" if that is even a word. I think they are both equal because you can see a puppy and you can also see that someone is sad.

Um, I don't believe that I am in someone else's dream because I have a lot of people tell me about their dreams and how can you tell someone about a dream if you are dreaming it? Sorry if that is sort of confusing and makes no sense.

I think that each individual person decides him/herself what is right and wrong for them. Each person has a different view on how things should be and they base what they believe to decide what things are right and wrong. The same goes for moral and immoral. Everyone has a different view on what is moral and immoral based on their own personality. ( I agree with Nathan on the right and wrong and moral and immoral part)

  4. Okay...on the other hand, I don't think I'm ready to twist my brain on that kind of stuff. I'm wondering why can't people leave stuff alone instead of trying to confuse themselves with fairytale idealogy. All I mean is to abide in peace and and put the love of family and friends before other things.
And that goes the same for political philosophy (what we talked about in class). People spend way to much time pondering through ways to prove that their ideas of the way a government should be run are supierior to what they have. If I had a chance to be blunt with a person like that, I would ask them why they don't put as much action into their marital or family values. Maybe then there would be less divorces:)

  5. I often wonder if I am dreaming. What if my whole life has been a dream, and I wake up in the morning as a 7 year old? It would be scary to know what it would be like to grow up before you actually have. I'd have to go through high school all over again..yuck.

As for right and wrong, as Mr. Meade says "deviance is standard." There are different standards for what is moral and immoral. In one country, it is ok to have 12 wives, but in the U.S., more than one sounds ridicules. I guess that right and wrong is whatever the culture makes it to be.

  6. Ok this stuff really makes a person think. Ever since we started talking about this today i've been wondering if life is just a bunch a series of dreams. It has kind of been driving me nuts thinking that this may not be real and i could wake up soon. Maybe no one really dies, maybe they just wake up and dissapear from our dream world. Ahh Mrs. Myers why are you making my mind think so much :)

  7. I LOVE THIS TOPIC! I enjoy this sopic so much! Where to even begin? Dreams are super interesting. I've had dreams where I've woken up and cannot remember if it really happened or not. It seemed so real, but yet it's not. What if my dreams are connected to another person in a different universe? And my dreams are there life. Or I've had several dreams that I am a Jew and I'm being killed by Nazi's. What if I was this person that I dream about frequently in a past life? And their life was showing through my dreams? It's so interesting! When my mom moved into our house a long time ago she had Indian dreams, but they only happen when she's sleeping in our house. What if there was an indian burial ground where our house is now and they are speaking to my mom through her dreams? Or Deja Vu. It's so weird. It happens to me all of the time. Your going through your day and something happens and you feel and know that it has happened before and you know what is coming next. How can you explain that? I had a dream a week ago about my Dance Coach's two year old son. I had a dream we were at a family gathering and he had these goggles that he was putting up to people's faces and laughing. I told her about it and she was all freaked out because over the weekend they had gone to her parents house and her aunts and uncles were there. And Brody was putting goggles up to people's faces and laughing!!! Why would that happen?!?!! and how can it happen?!

  8. First of all, I think we should define truth. Truth is reality, something which is really real. As Christians we believe we are saved through truth; Jesus Christ. He said, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me" John 14:6. Now, lets aske ourselves what sin is. Sin is a belief in a lie, the opposite of truth. When satan entered this world he took everything that which was created and twisted it, filling us up with lies. We must then become aware of such lies. Romans 12:2 says, "We can very easily be taken captive to the lies of this world if we do not remain vigilant." Therefore, we leave all the answers of this world up to God: what is right, what is wrong, how to live, and so on. When we start answering these big questions by ourselves, that's when we start running into problems. It's best to talk to the "Coach" (through prayer), read the "Play book" (bible), and execute the "plays" (live a life which is worthy in the eyes of God our creator. Keep it simple, we don't have to have all the answers, beacause HE DOES =)

  9. I agree 100 percent with Luke. As far as right and wrong goes: Look to God for the answers. He knows what's right and wrong. He told us in the Bible the things we should and shouldn't do. It's all up to Him.
I don't think I'm in someone else's dream. We're all living our own lives. It's a strangely interesting thing to think about the "what-ifs," but it is our life. And we're living it - for real. That's reality.
As for the puppy thing? I think that sadness and puppies are equally real. Sure, there are all the physical things in life that we know are there, but everyone has emotions: Sadness, excitement, love,... And I don't think that the emotions that everyone feels every day could just not exist.

  10. I don't think that right and wrong are something that we can decide for ourselves. If we all chose our own right and wrong the world would be caos!!
Ooh, about the dreams, I used to think about this a lot when I was younger. I used to be afraid that when I fell asleep I would wake up and find out my whole life had been a dream. Now that I'm older, I think that is actually pretty silly, and that we aren't dreaming or in other people's dreams.
