Existentialism is the study of existence and our choices. In your opinion, what does it mean to exist? To exist physically? To exist mentally?
After doing the activity in class, what did you learn about conformity?

First of all, the activity in class really did open my eyes as to how much everybody tries to conform. That is really stupid in my opinion, but who am I to say that. We all, me included, conform to what people think. The clothes we wear, the suff we buy, and everything we have in general, excluding necessities, we have because somebody said it was cool to do so, or we looked up to somebody who had those things. We should all just be ourselves, but that will never happen. Anybody who says they have never conformed is lying. For example, why else would all humans wear clothes, unlike any other animal? Why do almost all of us wear deoderant or perfume? If we all smelled bad, would anybody know?
ReplyDeleteOther than that realization, in my opinion existentialism is ridiculous. To as the question "Do we exist?" is perposterous. We are all here. We have leaned how the world works through science. We even know in general what the material world is like from the smallest particles (atoms) to the large scale of the universe. We definately exist. As far as mental existence, that is also stupid to question. You can't physically touch mental processes because they are going on inside your head, much like you can't touch the center of the earth, but you know its there
Nathan, thanks for the great answer. I really liked the human wearing clothes example! I'm glad that you understood that activity (even though it didn't really work out exactly the way it was supposed to).
ReplyDeleteTo physically exist would involve an individual to be alive and breathing! As far as mentally existing, that could pose a number of instances. One could be mentally dreaming, imagining, or actually living an experience.
ReplyDeleteLike Nathan said, it is human nature to conform. People like being noticed, liked being appreciated, and like to be a part of a group. This could pose a problem though. A good example of evil conformity within a nation would be Nazi Germany. Many citizens conformed to what was commanded and expected of them. Though it was morally wrong, many conformed to what the whole group wished to do.
Good job Rachael and Ashley =)
I think that this is hard to explain. I think everything exists including objects, people, feelings and emotions. I know they are all her and people feel them no matter what. So i think everything physically exists even if you can't touch it because it is obvious that everyone feels. I noticed what happened in the activity and i thought it was pretty cool. It's pretty interesting how that activity kind of played against the saying "marching to your own beat". Does anyone really march to there own beat because eventually they may think their doing it wrong, or is everyone else wrong.
ReplyDeleteBut anywho good job you two!
I think that what you feel exists is what is real. If you see and and you believe in it than it is real. I don't think anyone could tell a person what is real and what is not.

ReplyDeleteAs far as existence goes, I think that whatever we see and feel exists. We see eachother. We see animals, and plants, and the sun, and everything else. And we feel things like happiness, sadness, and anger. Religion would probably go along with the feeling part.
ReplyDeleteI learned that we all conform, lots of times without meaning to. But other times it's like we realize we're doing it, but we just really want to be like everyone else, because we feel like thats what is most important. Even though it really isn't.
Good project, chicas!
I think that existing is too hard to explain, but physically existing is easier. It's not just being alive because objects exist that aren't alive. I think that whatever you see physically exists but also there are things that exist that you can't see like gases and molecules and all that. Also, mentally existing is everything you think and feel. Even though you can't touch it, it still exists and is real to you.
ReplyDeleteI thought your activity was cool even though you had to explain it. I always knew that a lot of people conform, but it was interesting to see it demonstrated that way. I think sometimes it's ok to conform like if everyone else is being quiet in class and you don't want to be, but you conform to fit in.
I agree the activity was a really big eye opener for me, I think everyone tries to go with what everyone else does too much, and most people need to realize they can do their own thing!
ReplyDeleteAs for the meaning to exist and stuff I believe that everything does exist even if you can not touch it. I think that there is two types stuff that is physically and mentally.
I believe that to exist physically you just have to be able to touch it. But to exist mentally you have to be able to hav thoughs. Like a rock exists physically but not mentally. Also humans exist mentally untill we die, or are for some reason unable to create houghts, but this does not mean that we don't exist physically.
ReplyDeleteThe activity showed me thatwe have a natural want to do what the crowd does. Though sometimes this is deffinately a bad thing, it isn't always. It kind of reminds me of animals, like herds or flocks of animals. Thy naturally do what everyone else does, ad follows the movements of the others, this helps them stay safe.
To exist could mean many things. I think to exist physically means our existence here. Just to be alive. However to exist mentally I think you need to be able to be logical and think things through. Yoiu need to have consciousness and a conscience.Existing also can branch out from those things to the things we feel whether they are things in the air or around us or emotions and sensations.
ReplyDeleteYou guys did a wonderful job presenting!
It was very entertaining! :)
