Journal #1

Hello!

For your first journal, I would like you to discuss your hopes/fears about College Prep English. I have included some questions below to stimulate your response. I will take your comments into consideration when I am planning lessons, so be clear and honest.

-What do you want me to focus on this year? (Reading skills, writing skills, study skills, etc.)
-What aspects of grammar are you unclear about and need to learn? (Punctuation, parts of speech, etc.)
-What DON’T I need to cover? (What is a paragraph? How do I avoid a run-on sentence? etc.)
-What fears do you have about the upcoming year?
-How would you rate your reading skills on a scale from 1-10, with 1 being that you have a lot of difficulty with reading and 10 being that you are an excellent reader? Explain your score.
-How would you rate your writing skills, using the same 1-10 scale? Explain your score
-How would you rate your organizational skills, using the same scale? (Assignments in on time, etc.) Explain your score
-What do I need to know about you to make this year run smoothly?
-Finally, establish some goals for yourself for the school year. These goals can be both academic and social.

  1. My biggest fear about this upcoming year is just the homework load. I know that this is a college prep class, and I really don't have any questions about it as of right now. I don't feel that I can give an accurate number from 1-10 on my reading, writing, and organizing because everyone's interpretations of the numbers are different. I don't mind reading when I have an intriguing book; however, it is very rare that I find one I thoroughly enjoy. Hopefully I don't feel the same towards the books I choose to read this year. On the other hand, writing isn't a huge struggle for me. Organization comes fairly natural as well. I am excited to learn more and more as the year progresses and I hope to maintain steady grades.

  2. My only fear for my senior year is the amount of homework I know will be assigned. However, since I am a senior, I expect more homework and also more responsabilities. I am also a tiny bit scared of applying for colleges and scholarships and the like, but if I take it one day at a time it should be fine. I would say that I am a very proficient reader and writer, without attatching any numbers. I look forward to enjoying my senior year and learning a TON. The end.

  3. This year i hope to improve my writing skills especially when it comes to research papers. I am looking forward to writing creatively as well as reading some classic novels. I am not feeling too apprehensive about this year, although I am worried I might be a little overwhelmed with some homework. I would say I am a fairly decent reader, but I am definitely not an organized person.

  5. As I sit here watching my cursor mock me with all its blinking, I can’t help but think about all those poor trees that had to be killed just to make sure that there were plenty of white sheets of paper for us. It is such a shame that they had to be killed just so we can type up all of those papers this year. I do hope that they are enjoying their new life up in tree heaven away from all the horrors that a tree would have. ;)

On a more serious note, I think that there are some basic things that we don’t need to review (what a paragraph is, proper punctuation and capitalization, the basic parts of speech, etc.). As this is College Prep English, we shouldn’t really have to review the basics as we should have a general idea on how to use them by now. We did get in this class for a reason after all.

When it comes to my skills with reading, writing, and being organized, I am going to give myself an 8/10 for each. I love to read and write, and I like to think that I am a pretty organized individual. However, to me, there is always room for improvement in all three of those areas. Where there is a will, there is a way!

I really am excited for this class. While that may be so, I am a little worried about the workload that comes along with it (oh, don’t forget to add applying for scholarships and colleges to that too!). However, if I just take it one day at a time, I am pretty sure that I’ll make it through alright. With that in mind, some of my goals for this year are to perform well in my classes and make the best out of my final year of high school. Oh, I also hope that I will be able to get even closer to writing up a 50,000 word novel for NaNoWriMo this November. I gave it a go last year and ended up having roughly 20,000 words at the end of the month, so it’ll be interesting to see how far I get this year.

Umm ... yeah. That’s all that I can really think of for this blog post. And sorry for all the rambling (I tend to do that). See you tomorrow in class!

  6. This year i would like to improve my writing skills. I have a hard time putting my thoughts into words. I would really like to improve my creative writing. One of my fears about this year is all the homework, but after all this is COLLEGE PREP English, so I am not going to complain. I think I am a decent reader and pretty well organized. I am looking forward to this year and hopefully this class will better prepare me for College English.

  7. My biggest fear is that I have too much on my plate with sports and other classes. I'm afraid that I won't be able to keep up. Another big fear of mine is that my standards for my work are going to unreachable because my writing and creativity skills are low when it comes to writing papers and what not. I would have to say my reading skill is probably around a 7 or 8. I love to read I just don't think I have time.

I'm really looking forward to this class and seeing if I can handle everything that goes with it.

  8. i would like to focus mainly on writing skills and reading skills. You don't need to cover what a paragraph is, but sometimes I use run-on sentences! My fears of this class is reading. I don't like to read. I do not have a lot of free time, and when I do I definately do not run straight to a book! It is unfortunate, but true! I rate my reading skills to be at about a 7. thought I don't like to read, I am a good reader. I would rate my writing skills at like a 5.5. My sister got all of the writing skills and I got everything else! We always joke about that, but it is sort of true! I think that i am a pretty organized person. I do know that I need to organize my time better. I will need some help throughout the school year, but once you teach me how to do something then I am set. My main thing is that you help me and be patient with me, and I will learn and get better. I promise you that!! What i would like to accomplish this year is to learn how to prepare for college and have incredible memories! Also to obtain stright A's all year! :)

  9. This year is going to be pretty interesting. I would love to be able to read books faster and still be able to understand them. I also hope that having many more papers to write will help with mastering the format of future assignments. I do expect this year to be more challenging and for there to be more work, but all this will help with colledge and make it much easier. On a scale from 1 to 10 for a reading level, I would say i'm about a 7 to an 8.5. I do read books on occasion, and understand them for the most part, but sometimes they do have some parts that I don't fully comprehend. Writing is not what i'm strongest at doing, but thats mostly in setting up the format and organizing. So those two abilities would both be around 6. I think this year will run smoothly as long as I can keep track of assignments and have enough time to complete them. My main goals for this year are to make it the most fun it can be and to make all my work enjoyable and well done.

I think this year is going to be really fun. I can't wait to see how it all plays out.

  10. This year I would like to focus more on writing skills rather than punctuation or the parts of speech. I feel I am a very proficient reader and writer, but there is always room for improvement. I have always enjoyed reading, and writing is something that has come naturally to me. I hope that my organization will be much better this year, and that I will get papers done as soon as possible. My main goal is to finish my senior year strong. I am very excited for the challenge that College Prep English offers me, and the fact that it will prepare me for my freshman year of college.

  11. I am terrified that I don't have enough time to sit around and read books. My life is pretty fast-paced. But I hope that I will gain superior writing skills, because last year I really struggled with it. I just didn't understand what I was doing wrong. Most importantly I hope I learn to enjoy writing this year, and easily cite sources. I want to be prepared for college!

  12. This year my number one fear in this class is the reading. I know I am a good reader, but I never seem to be able to find the time. I want to read, but it just seems there is always something going on or I am just too tired. I hope and I believe I can fix my simple grammer errors I have made in the past. I also hope that when basketball gets around that I can keep my focus on the class and get done what needs to get done with careful preperation and not get in the bad habbit of rushing myself to do it on the night before it's due. I think this will be a hard class, but I am up for the challenge.

  13. I would have to say I am pretty excited for this year. I am a little worried about the homework load with sports and extra curricular activities, but I hope that I will be able to manage it just fine. In college prep english I'm hoping to improve my writing skills. Writing does come pretty easily to me, but it's the creative aspect that I have some trouble with. I do like to read as long as I have a book that grabs my attention right from the beginning, otherwise I'll drop it almost immediately. My organizational skills are pretty good but I am hoping to make them better this year. I'm looking forward to this class and seeing how I grow as time goes on.

  15. I am really looking forward to this years english mostly because i love to read. I'm a little nervus about all the papers and writing though but i have a feeling i'll get use to it very fast. As for my reading skills i'd say i'm average so about a 5. i love to read books and i understand them but as for typing and writing reviews i tend to strugle a little more. I'm really hoping we can review grammer because i seem to have a hard time with that, just the spelling of words mostly. As far as being organized i could use a lot of work i can't keep things sraight and its hard to keep things in order. I'm really looking forward to this class and i hope i learn all i'm hoping for and much more.

  16. I am looking forward to this class. I would say focus on mostly everythings. Everybody could use work on something. I'm not sure what I am unclear about in the grammar department and I'm not sure if there is anything you don't exactly need to cover. Probably the only thing I'm concerned about for this class is my organization skills. Getting ahead if I can on papers. My reading skills I think is pretty high. My writing skills on the other hand are not so high along with my organizational and preparation skills. Not sure what you would need to know about me either. If I were to set goals it would be to try and stay ahead in writing papers.

  17. Sorry this is a little late... I was on the road all day yesterday. I'll try to blog everyday that I can while I'm gone.

I think this year will be very interesting. The things that I think should be heavily weighted should be studying skills such as how to take proper notes, organizational skills, etc. I think that the everyday English aspects such as punctuation, grammar, spelling, etc., don't need to be focused on as much... My fears for this year include, but are not limited to, preparing for the future, making friends, and all of the homework to add to my job. My reading and writing skills, in my opinion, are at least an eight. I began reading before kindergarten and have excelled over the years. Writing has always been an escape for me, as well as reading has been. My organizational skills, as far as handing in homework on time, etc., are a ten. I like to get my homework done right away so I don't have to worry about it later. Some things to know about me are that I am a very opinionated person and I will stand my ground on anything and everything I believe in. I am also a very enthusiastic person and enjoy activities. (: I'm very excited to get back to Wisconsin so I can go to class and learn about British Literature!
