Wednesday

We are about to begin reading Othello by Shakespeare. Let's discuss your findings on who Shakespeare is, in your opinion, and your expectations for the play.

  1. I think that William Shakespeare of Stratford upon Avon is the same Shakespeare that wrote the plays and such. I found this awesome article (really in depth) on pbs.org, "In Search for Shakespeare" that really explained things well and had good evidence etc...You should take a look! I honestly have no opinion about what the play is going to be about…it kind of sounds like a Greek warrior god.

  2. I believe that William Shakespeare of Stratford-upon-Avon was the same man as the Shakespeare who wrote the plays and sonnets too. Sarah told me about shakespeareauthorship.com and I found a lot of good information that supported William Shakespeare. I don't really know much about Othello but I'm looking forward to reading it I suppose. Maybe Othello can spark a little interest in me.:)

  3. I expect this play to be dramatic. I do actually no a little bit of this play so i kind of no what happenes but still i enjoy it. It might have betrail and misunderstandings in it. I believe Shakespear of Stratford-upon-Avon is the one who wrote all these wonderful plays and everything else. Just from starting my research i see a lot of points but i don't really believe any of them. So i'm going to stay with shakespeare is the real shakespeare.

  4. I think that Shakespeare really did write the plays and poems credited to him. Shakespeare was always the author of his work to me, but I did have some doubts. After doing our persuasive papers about the controversy, the few doubts that I had have been demolished with the historical evidence proving that Shakespeare was really Shakespeare of Stratford-upon-Avon.

As for Othello, I don’t know what to expect. I have heard of the play before, but I don’t know anything about the plot or the characters in the play. So, hopefully, it will be interesting!

  5. From what I found researching, I believe William Shakespeare of Stratford-Upon-Avon was the same William Shakespeare who wrote the plays and poems. There were a lot of good websites out there that had me convinced that he was the real Shakespeare. I have never heard of Othello until yesterday when you mentioned it in class, so I have no idea what it's going to like. I am guessing it's going to be some strange comedy or romantic play like Shakespeare always writes about :)

  6. I think that William Shakespeare wrote his own material, and did not take credit for other peoples work. He had the education he needed to excell in his area of expertice and became the greatest poet in history. There is not much good evidence supporting that he did not write his own materials. I think that this story will be good, and probably dramatic as well. The Merchant od Venice was well writen and good to read, so I expect the same type of reaction to this.

  7. I think Shakespeare wrote the works with his name on them. If I write my name on a report, I wrote it. And the whole issue didn't come up until like two hundred years after his death. If he was a fake, wouldn't someone have brought the issue up sooner? If Shakespeare didn't really write them, wouldn't someone known write away anyway?

People also said that he wasn't educated enough to write with the knowledge that he did. But he did go to school in Stratford where he was taught Latin and I think the other one was Greek.

When it comes to Othello, I really don't know what to expect. I don't know what is about or anything like that. You said it's short so thats always good. But it will be interesting to see what its about.

  8. I still don't have a strong opinion on who the real Shakespeare was. Honestly I would like to say that the original Shakepeare of Stratford upon Avon is the author, seeing as how that is what I have always been told...but we don't actually know. So lets just say it is him with the evidence we have, but if we are eventually proven wrong with hard evidence then I'd be fine with that, too.
I don't know what to expect from Othello...

  9. I believe Shakespeare is Shakespeare. I really don't understand why there even is a controversy. I think people need to find better things to do with their time than call a writer from the 1500s a fraud.

I guess I expect Othello to be like the other Shakespeare plays we've read. Other than that I don't really know what to expect.

  10. Well I think that Shakespeare is actually shakespeare. I found a lot of information on a site called the shakespeare authorship page. I agree with Elizabeth's statement that people should find better things to do. And I expect Othello to be somewhat "tragic" and have some twists and turns that I would not expect.

  11. I think that Shakespeare is the real Shakespeare and I'm sticking to that! As for Othello, I wasn't here for the introduction so I don't know what the play will be about.

  12. I think that Shakespeare could possibly be the real shakespeare, though there is a lot of information proving that he isn't. It is important to find the real author, but I wouldn't mind whether it was Shakespeare or not. Othello, I hope, will be interesting.

  13. I think William Shakespeare of Stratford-upon-Avon is the real Shakespeare who wrote all the poems and plays, but after researching and reading Teren's paper I sometimes think maybe he isn't the real Shakespeare. As for my expectations of the play Othello, I'm not sure what to expect. I hope it isn't too hard to read and follow. I'm not expecting to enjoy it though because of how confusing the language he wrote his plays can be. The use of "thy" and "thee", ohh and "hast" just really confuses me.

  14. I think that Shakespeare was Shakespeare at times, but not like all the time. I think that maybe there were people behind the line who were writing some plays or poems and stuff. Not sure who it could have been, but thats what I think.

  15. i think that Edward de Vere id the real william shakespeare. but i dont know why he would use the name of some one who works at the same theater where the plays were preformed as a psuedonym. the main reason i think that shakespeare didnt write his own works, is because he was not very educated.

I am not excited for othello. i am not a fan of shakespeare writing, or plays.

  16. Oh well, I'm not sure what I expected.

In general, I expected it to be just like any other story we've read so far in class. Something I don't understand, and only get it when we discuss in class. Just boring, pretty much.

After researching Shakespeare, I actually do believe he is the true author. And I expected it to be about love, or something typical.
