Many, if not all of you, have had jobs - babysitting, mowing, shoveling, or working at the tree farm, fast food, etc. What have you learned from working? What are the advantages of working while in high school? What are the disadvantages? Do you think that students should work while going to school?

  1. I learned leadership, concentration, more responsibility, and some other things. Some advantages to working while in high school are making money to go out and have fun with your friends and freedom. Disadvantages would be not getting homework done. I think students should work while going to school because it's a good learning experience.

  2. I have learned that is is worth it! I have found working to be somewhat enjoyable because I feel productive and I feel like I'm not wasting my time when I am working. When you work, you have the ability to save or spend money however you like, and it feels good to have some responsibility and freedom.

  3. I've had a job all through high school and sometimes it stinks. It has taught me how to manage my time well and has taught me how to be organized. Responsibility was also learned. The advantages of having a job is that you have money to do things. Like if you want to go out with friends you can get money instead of asking your parents and then they only give you like $10. With working I can take out as much as I want. So yeah, working has helped but sometimes I wish I could've just enjoyed high school and the weekends without knowing I had to go to work. Oh well though! It's still be great! :)

  4. My first real job was working at Old Navy. Although our store's management was never on the same page and always changing, my coworkers were all really fun to work with. I learned that sometimes I had to do things I hated, like redoing the denim wall. It was an alright first job, but I am definitely not working there ever again.

  5. Well i think working really gave me a sence of resposnibility. I do think that all students should at lease try and work at something because it really gives them a idea of the real world. If kids just sit at home and only do school work how are they every going to get use to jobs once they get out of school.

  6. I always have had jobs in the summertime, but not so much during the school year. During the summer, I work in gardens, babysit, and clean homes for the elderly. Working gives me a sense of purpose and responsibility. It also allows me to save money for things I want to buy or for college. During the school year, I babysit periodically and I still clean homes sometimes, but that is only about once a month, so its not bad at all. I think working during school would be hard for me because of homework and sports and stuff, but I think that if someone has nothing better to do, they might as well work! :)

  7. I shovel. This gives me a good income and allows me some good manual labor. However somtimes I run into problems with a large amount of homework and I cannot always get the shoveling done right away. I think that students should have some sort of job during high school because they can then get their own money and it makes them more responsible.

  8. I don't really work much. Ocationally I'll have a baby sitting job sprout up, or doing manual labor for my grandma, but other than that I haven't worked. I simply don't have time during the school year, and so far, my summers have been COMPLETELY filled with AAU basketball. I wish I had a weekend job, becuase I never have money...ever!! Never having money is stressfull, exspecially when I constantly have to ask my parents for money, which sometimes they don't have. I'd much rather spend/use my own money, but without money I can't do that!! This summer I am going to be on a senior basketball team, and we don't play in a lot of tournaments, so I'm going to apply to a few jobs! I'd like to save up a bunch of money over the summer to keep me somewhat stable for college.

  9. While working at the bank, I've learned a lot. Responsiblity is obvioulsy a big thing. Another thing is that work isn't always fun. Sometimes they'll be like five really cranky people in a row. There are a ton of benifits to working in high school. It is really nice being able to have money and go out and do things with friends. But since I'm at work a lot, there are somethings I can't do. But it will be nice to have some money saved up for when I go to school next year.

  10. The only "real" job is the job I currently have. I work at DQ in Bloomer. Last year I worked like 6 days a week, even after dance practice on school nights. The disadvantages of working while in high school is being tired. I remember driving home after work, and almost falling asleep every night while driving. Then I fell behind in school work. Everything added up and I was so tired and stressed. But I needed the money so I delt with it. The advantages are, of course, getting paid. I also learned to memorize and adapt to new things. It also helps me stay organized in my daily life. I constantly work on my speed (when cooking) and getting better at friendly customer service - which is important, no matter what job. I also learn to manage my time efficiently.

I think all students should have jobs in high school. I don't think everyone can handle working everyday (with sports and other responsabilities) but I think they should definitely work on the weekends as much as possible. I know it sucks to pay for your own stuff, but I like to do it because it's all a part of growing up and maturing. I don't rely on my parents and I like it that way.

  11. I mow lawns in the summer and shovel snow in the winter. I learned that it gets hot in the summer and cold in the winter. Also in the summer, I prep the baseball fields. In the winter I ref basketbal tournaments. while working I learned that it is easier to do the job when before it has to be done. Because it is easier.

  12. I sometimes work at the pet store for my mom. I don't get paid hardly anything...:( I reaaaaly don't like working there. It is probably good for me, though. I don't like interacting with customers, or cleaning the puppy cages, or answering peoples questions. I could never actually work in retail as a job. I just don't like it. I think another reason I don't like it is because it is smelly there, and everything has pet germs all over it. I dread the thought of going to work. So I mostly don't work. I just deal with having no money.
If I hated my future job I would quite and do something I love.

  13. I've been working since I was twelve. I babysat for my cousins and then I started working at the Tree Farm. It has taught me many valuable lessons that everyone needs in life. It has taught me to be responsible, how to communicate effectively, how to manage my time well, and good customer service. I also learned how to budget my money. When I started babysitting when I was twelve I started saving my money to buy a car. When the time came, I had the money. I like working, well I don’t really like it but it is worth it...like Erinn said, I feel productive and I have money to spend afterwards or save. It pays off to work. Speaking of working, I need to find a job after dance is done :\

  14. I have had a lot of different jobs and right now I’m working as a swim coach back in Sweden. I have learned so much about myself through my jobs and I feel really good about it. Working with children as I do right now give me a new perspective to many things, it’s so different to see the world through their eyes.
Starting to work early not only gives you the opportunity to learn new things, it also gives you the opportunity to earn your own money, which I think it’s a good thing. You learn that money disappears very fast and that you have to be smart when it’s come to spending money.
A bad thing with working during high school is that it takes a lot of time from school work, which can worsen your grades.
But still I think it’s a good think to get a job early, even if you’re still in high school. You get so much out of it, and you feel really mature.

  15. I do not have a “go to work every day/weekend” type of job … yet, anyway. I have my chores to do at home, babysit my siblings and, occasionally, other people’s kids, and other little things here and there. During school, I don’t really do a whole lot besides schoolwork and a few extracurricular activities. Summer is the time when I work my bum off. I’ve learned that, if you want the money, you’re going to have to work for it, even if the job you have isn’t exactly the greatest thing in the world. It teaches you responsibility, how to organize your time, and multi-task (without failing at it epically), which is VERY important with college being just around the corner. Those are probably the advantages in having a job during high school. Some disadvantages would be feeling extremely tired and stressed out, which could led to poor performance in school. Nevertheless, the whole organizing your time would come into play. Overall, having a job during high school is rather beneficial for a person, though there are some occasional challenges that may come up.

  16. I worked at McDonalds...waste of my life. I hated it. I learned nothing except how much i hated working there. I didn't like anyone i worked with. It was easy money but I hated it so much that the fact that i was making money didn't outweigh how much i didn't like the job. Its nice not having an everyday job because then it allows me to focus on sports...and school, i guess. I probably should have had a job the entire time i was in high school but it didn't realy appeal to me and I didn't have a ton of time because of sports.

  17. The only job that I had, was helping to clean up a bar for opening. There wasn't anything that I really learned from there except for teamwork and responsibility. If you have a job while in high school, you get to earn money to use while spending time with friends. Although if you have a job you will have less time to do your homework. That would be a teribble thing.

  18. One big thing that I have learned from working is being able to manage my time. When you have responsibilities that come before doing what you want to do, you learn to manage your time better. I feel my leadership qualities have grown tremendously since I have had a job. It teaches you how to get through rough times. It has helped me alot on getting through school
