Wednesday

I read a news article this morning about a mother who "unplugged" her teenagers for six months: no cell phones, no iPods, no video games, no t.v., no Internet, etc. At first her children were lost without their electronics, but gradually they learned to cope. How would you handle your parents "unplugging" you from technology? How would you spend your free time if you couldn't use technology? Would you cheat and borrow iPods and cell phones from your friends? How would you cope?

  1. I think I would do OK with this. I would really miss the internet, but i think I'd get over it. Oh, i don't know though...i would miss t.v. too. The thing i would miss the most would be an ipod. I need to listen to music. Of course, I could just buy a record player...or would that count as technology? I don't think i could handle it as much in the winter. In the summer...it might be fine.

  2. Record players are okay because it's something that the whole family can listen to together.

The mom's main problem: the disconnect in the family because everyone was connected to his/her own technology. Therefore, she pulled the plug on individual technology and television.

  3. Yikes! I will admit, I use my technology a lot! When I get home from practice I go on facebook and I'm always texting at night. I usually fall asleep to movies too. Lately though, I have been reading before I go to bed because it makes me tired. I'm not really sure how I would stay connected with everyone. Texting and facebook is how I communicate, I know that is terrible. Thinking about it, I should probably get unplugged. It would be good for me. I think I would get use to it. Honestly, I think I would spend my free time reading more. BUT, I couldn't get unplugged until Friday Night Lights is over. I can't miss that show. That would be sad, even though, I'm going to buy it when it comes out anyway. Wow, 6 months without technology. Writing this made me realize how much I use it. Dang. I agree with Sierra though, summertime would be better than the winter. Winter would be tough to go without technology.
Could the kids call on a house phone to make plans with their friends? Or could they not use phones either?...I wouldn't know what was going on! I would be isolated from the world it seems like!

  5. I think I'd die if i couldn't play duty with Teren and Lewis. It would kill me not to check my phone whenever I wanted either. I don't know how I'd interact with people. I wouldn't be able to talk to anyone so I'd be lost and probably go crazy sitting in my room all day. Because I had gone crazy I'd probably completey forget to take a shower because when i take a shower i need music from my laptop to listen to. My life would crumble if i was "unplugged."

  6. I think that I would be ok, unless they take away my Kobo. Then it would suck. Other than that I think I would be ok. I wonder how the kids would do homework if they needed to use the internet. I would definitely have plenty of time to do homework and I would have plenty of time to read. I just hope I would be able to use my Kobo. Everything I could probably live without except the Internet to do homework with if necessary.

I would die! I always have my cell phone with me and I don't know what I would do without it. It's also very convenient for my parents too when I'm somewhere they can always reach me on my phone. I do think though eventually I would adjust. I would definitely get more done because I couldn't go on FaceBook for like 20 min. I'd spend a lot more time outside too instead of in front of the television. In the long run, I would benefit from it alot! It'd be interesting to try I think but I don't know if I would try it.

  8. Yeah..hmmm..well I use the internet a lot, especially right now with college apps etc...If i didn't have the internet oh boy..i dont know what I would do. TV i could do without. My phone...I couldn't really do without because we don't have a landline, so that is the only way that anyone can reach me.

  9. I would not miss TV at all, since lately I hardly ever have time to watch it. I would definitely miss my cell phone and my computer. I wouldn't miss my ipod because I broke it. I use my cell phone every single day, I could definitely not go without that, it would be super inconveinant and annoying. Not using the computer would also be hard because I use one everyday, mostly for the internet. If it was only like a week, it would be ok, but definitely not six months.

  10. I definately think it would be hard to adjust at first, but I think it would be good after a while. I think it would allow me to have more free time, and use my time wiser. I also think it would allow me to spend more time outside doing other things! I have always thought it would be interesting to live how my parents did when they were kids. :)

  11. It would be really hard to get used to that. It would be ok, but no fun at all. Sort of like when the power goes out. When that happens, we loose our tv and interent and all of the sudden, I have no idea what to do. It would give me more time to do other things, but it would be hard to get a hold of friends to do things if I didn't have my phone or facebook. But I think it would be ok once I got used to it.

  12. I think I would die if my parents did that to me. Technology is, like, my best friend and I seem to always be using it. After a while, I think that I would get used to not having the technology, but it would be a challenge to not use it in my home at first. I would totally ‘cheat’ and stay at my friends or neighbors’ houses just to use the internet or watch TV. I could live without the videogames, though I do not think that I would be able to live without my iPod as I use that to listen to music whenever I can. But after a while, I wouldn’t care as I would have realized that I don’t need all the technology to keep me busy or to get things done.

  13. I think it would be a good thing to have some time away from the electronics. I do feel like I get too into it sometimes and would like a break everynow and then. I could find lots of other things to do. I like to read when the books are of intrest or just organize my room. I think it would be alot easier in the summer then winter because you can go outside and explore or ride bike. I would not want to cheat, because that would make me feel bad about breaking the streak of not using electronics. I think I would enjoy things much more without the distraction of electronics.

  14. Technology is handy and very enjoyable. However, it's not necessary. Yeah, I have my own TV, laptop, cellphone, iPod...etc. I mainly have these items because everyone else has them today. I don't EVER turn on my TV, unless I have a friend over and we watch a movie (which is VERY rare). I use my laptop for homework and sometimes Facebook but I am not active on Facebook at all. Ever since Sean left I haven't used my phone barely at all. I think I received around 5 messages since last week. Instead of texting Sean constantly, I've been writing letters (the old fashioned way). It's not that bad, actually. :) I often think about how peaceful I feel with the world and I come to reality when I isolate myself from technology. Technology overtakes people's minds and they often get out of touch with the real world. Life is much more quiet and I have much more time to figure things out without many interruptions.

  15. I think I would do OK, at least after a while. I use internet everyday and I use my telephone every other second, but after being forced to be without it, I just think I would get use to it.
The worst part is the isolation; today you have contact with your friends through SMS and Facebook and I would feel really lost without it. Kind of tragic if you think about it.
The one part I feel that I would cheat with is my Ipod, I just can’t live without music. Then I saw that it was okay to listen to record players and then it would be okay, but I would still miss my Ipod.
I think I would be able to go through it without cheating during the summertime’s, cause then you can be outside all the time and you meet your friends at the beach every day. In the wintertime’s…I think I would be a cheater once in a while. Some days, when it’s just too cold to go outside, there’s just not very much to do if your home all by yourself.

  16. well i would go insain. I use my computer and stearo and i pod to get away from my family. I love them but i think after a while i would just go insain. I would always cheat. I'd want tp go to a friends house every night. Maybe not just for the tv and stuff but to get away from my parents.

  17. Technology is a big part of my life because I have to work with it everyday. Music is a big part of my life also, I really can't live without it. I don't watch tv very often, thanks to homework and now college. I spend a lot of time with my dad, so I don't think he would ever do something to this extreme to spend time with me.

  18. Me without technology would not go well! I would probably go crazy if I did not have any of it. If I got money like these kids did though, then I would do it! Anyway, it has become a big part of my life, and many others I am sure. I would be a mess without our new technology appliances.
