Many, if not all of you, have had jobs -- babysitting, mowing, shoveling, or working at the tree farm, fast food, etc. What have you learned from working? What are the advantages of working while in high school? What are the disadvantages? Do you think that students should work while going to school?

I would say I have always had a pretty good work ethic, but this past summer was the first summer I had a job that was on a specific schedule. I really learned the importance of being on time and working the whole day. Working in high school can get somebody a good start towards saving for college, but they shouldn't let it go too far and take up their whole time. Summer also needs to needs to be a time for hanging out and relaxing. I would say people should definitely have a job in high school as there are many benefits to it.
ReplyDeleteIn Duluth I had a full time summer job. I would only work during school when I had breaks. I washed buses (inside and outside) at my moms work place. During the summer I worked about 9 hours a day 5 days a week. I enjoyed having a job because I would have money but the only time I could do things with my friends was on the weekend. I learned how to work hard at my job and I for the most part I enjoyed working there. It was hard work though, and very tiring. I look forward to getting a job around here soon.
ReplyDeleteThe only regularly-scheduled job I've had is babysitting. I learned that I do not want to go into child care. It felt good to earn my own money, though, instead of always asking my parents for things. I think that it's a good idea for students to work in high school, but not so many hours that it interferes with their academics or even major extracurriculars. Students should not skip the high school phase and head straight into the adult-working phase. Working is good for developing responsibility, but it can be more stressful than beneficial in some cases.
ReplyDeleteI have had a job every year of high school. It has taught me to be responsible. Earning your own money is a great feeling. I feel people appreciate things more when it's their own. It has taught me how to save money and spend it wisely. I think people should work during High School because it gives them a little taste of the real world and it teaches people to be responsible-hard workers. Although I complain about going to work some days, I have gained a lot from the jobs that I have had. Also, it really helps to figure out what you want to do in the future.
ReplyDeleteI have had a job all through high school and I would definetly say that it has helped out alot. Having a job has taugt me more of a responsiblity and makes me value how much my parents spend on me. A job in high school gives you money to spend on things like gas. A downfall of working is that you have less times to spend with friends but money is well worth it.
ReplyDeleteI have had two formal jobs and several jobs like shoveling and babysitting.These jobs have taught me that I need to be responsible because I am being payed to do my job and I need to do it well. Even though I dont like to go to work somedays I am glad I have a job in highschool it gives me more freedom.
ReplyDeleteI started working my sophomore year at Marketplace. I typically had around 25 hours a week. Last year is when it had the most effect on me. I seemed to never get a break to relax or anything. There are many things I have learned from working. I learned how to manage my time a lot better and learned what it's like in the real world. Working in high school can have many advantages. The obvious one is having money to spend for gas and other miscellaneous things. It also taught me to be more responsible and helped me manage my priorities a lot better. One disadvange is the late nights when I had homework and had to work late. Another disadvantage is when you have to work and can't do something you'd rather be doing. Now I only work weekedends and that has worked out better with having more free time to myself but also making money. I think it is important to have a job in high school because it helps make students more responsible and gives students a way to learn how to manage their own money.
ReplyDeleteI have not had a regular real job until this last summer. I have babysat a lot and done many things for many people that would earn me money but nothing that was a constant deal. I now work at Jake's supper club and still occasionally babysit. I love being able to earn my own money because I hate asking my parents for some. It makes me feel very guilty to ask for money now. From all my jobs, I have learned to be more responsible and take credit for my own mistakes. It helped me to understand that I can not take advantage of people, not that I ever did. I learned to be more appreciative of people around me and people who serve me in restaruants. I feel that from my job now, I am not as shy and I know how to handle myself in certain situations. I think having a job in school is a good idea to teach people the real life. I do not think it is right to overwhlem yourself because of it though.
ReplyDeleteI work at Kyle's Market and I think the main thing that I've learned is being really social with people. I am always talking to and helping people and before I started working there I wasn't a very good talked, but now I'd like to think I'm pretty social. It also teaches good responsiblilty and also a little bit of how the real world works and how to handle having a job. It teaches how to manage money as well. I think that its a good idea to have a job in high school.
ReplyDeleteI work at the Dollar Stop and More, for a little over 1 year now. When I got the job, I was not looking for one, but I am glad I got it. Working has taught me several things in life: responsibly, time management, budgeting and work ethic. You have to like your job; otherwise you are not going to put all 100% of effort into it. I love my job, but a lot of people would hate it. I think everyone should have a job in high school because it teaches you so much and prepares you for your future. Also, you do not want to work and have a lot of hours, because we are only in high school once and need to enjoy every minute.
ReplyDeleteI think it is a good idea to have a job during some point of high school. One clear advantage is that you earn your own money. Responsibility is also learned, by having to show up, no matter how bad the job smells, how hot it is, or how far into the night it goes. However there are a fair amount of disadvantages and decision making. Working on a neighbor's farm on a regular basis while living on another farm tends to have a lot of conflicts. Another disadvantage is that time always seems to run short, no matter how one looks at it, or attempts to work things in. I think that it does help on how prepared an individual will be for the future, of life in the real world.
ReplyDeleteI have had a couple different jobs, and the one I have now is working at a horse stable. Having a job in high school is advantageous because it teaches kids to appreciate money and manage it. It also teaches responsibility and commitment. But from another perspective, it is also not beneficial in the sense that it detracts from what is important-school work. If someone can prioritize and handle multiple responsibilities, then I don't see why it is an issue. I also feel like high school is a time to develop one's interests and hobbies. We will have the rest of our lives to work and make money, and I think high school kids shouldn't make themselves miserable working all the time just to have some cash. But it's different if you enjoy your job. In my case, I love it. I get to be around horses all day. To me that isn't work.
ReplyDeleteI am a waitress and it has taught me to work hard and be responible. It is great to have a job while in high school! You get money to spend and it can teach you how to save your money and to ration it. I think kids that have a job in high school is great! It is a huge responsiblity and can teach high schoolers many things. The disadvantage of woking in high school is being tired for school, stressed out, and less time for homework.
ReplyDeletei think having a job in high school is good. it has taught me a lot and has forced me to become a more organized person due to the fact that i have to keep track of homework/school, dance, AND work schedules. but i enjoy it
