You should be reading Wuthering Heights. As a classic Gothic novel, this contains all the elements of a good Gothic: a Byronic hero, wild country, and elements of the supernatural. I would like you to try to write a Gothic short story or poem today. Good luck!

  1. I am going to be honest, I think there is obvious reasons why no one has done this yet...

  2. Once upon a time there was a group of fifteen very intelligent students at colfax high school who decided to take a college prep . English class their senior year. They embraced the idea of learning new and challenging things. Things were going very smoothly. First and second quarter came and went like night and day. The students were enjoying this class with an awesome teacher. Until one dreadful day when something unusual happened. Something was intoroduced to the students that had a black cover with different shades of brown making a grainy picture on the front. The cover read: Wuthering Heights. The students were skeptical at first, but they decided to give it a try. The first chapters read like a phone book, but the teacher said, "it gets way better." The student read a few more chapters and realized that the book didn't get any better. There were two Catherine's in the book, two Heathcliff's, and a lot of Linton's. The teacher began giving pop quizes and the students did horribly. The students decided one day to do something about it. There was a circuis in town so they went and talked to the ring leader and told him the situation. He said, "not a problem kids, I have a monkey who can pick locks and we will makes this book disappear in no time at all." The next day the students went to school, their books were no where to be found so the teacher said that she would run to a bookstore and pick some more books up. The next day she came and said, "the store was all out so I asked the lady at the front desk if they were getting any more in. The woman said that she had never heard of the book." Soon this book disappeared and to this day the students don't know how the ring leader and his monkey did it.

  3. Nobody could recall the last time the sun had shown itself. Despite the lack of light, the castle walls still managed to throw dark shadows over the town. Nobody dared leave this saddest of places, because beyond the shadow lay an infinite forest, a tangled mass of unknown terrors. On the outermost edge of the town lived a father and a son. They were of no relation to each other, however. The father's children had vanished mysteriously, and the son had never known a parent. The son grew to be strong and independent under these unusual circumstances, a young man of few words and many thoughts. One day, he decided discover what had become of his—and his surrogate father’s—families. He set out into the forest, hoping that its mystery would solve his own. He travelled through its bushes and brambles, bartering with gnomes, avoiding witches’ traps, and harkening to the ghosts of travelers past for direction. After exactly one year, he came to a clearing in the center of the forest. There lay a whirling blackness into which he knew those he sought had been taken. He fearlessly walked into it—and continued his adventure there.

  4. One stormy night Elizabeth's sister went mysteriously missing. Elizabeth ran outside in a frantic search for her sister. The wind was blowing the rain so hard that she could not see much in front of her. The sky was the darkest she had ever seen it before and the clouds were wildly circling above her. Lighting came from all directions and the thunder was deafening. Elizabeth ran to the cliff nearby their cottage, thinking her sister may have fallen over. The dark green waves crashed against the rocks. There was no way she could tell if her sister was down there or not. Suddenly there was a light beside her and when she turned she saw her mother. She froze, knowing that her mother had died three years ago. Her mother started walking towards the woods nearby. Elizabeth followed. Suddenly her mother stopped and pointed to a huge hole in the ground. Elizabeth ran to the hole, finding her sister lying inside. She had sleptwalked into the woods and fell in the hole, breaking her leg. When Elizabeth got her sister out, she turned and her mother was no longer there, only the lingering sent of her perfume. Elizabeth gathered up all her strength and carried her sister home through the pounding rains and wind. They made it to the house and Elizabeth took care of her injured sister. Later on that week, Elizabeth mentioned seeing their mother to her sister. Her sister said that she had also seen their mother that night, she was the one who held up her head to keep her from drowning in the mud until Elizabeth came to the rescue. Ever since, Elizabeth and her sister have known that their mother is always looking out for them, even in her death.

  5. There once was a hero,
and his pants were a size zero.
He lived in a remote area,
    that had outbursts of malaria.
    He never lied,
and had a lot of pride.
One day he came across a ghost,
    that was scarier then most.
    He used only one gun,
which made the ghost want to run.
It all of a sudden started to rain,
which made the blood run into the drain.
He had defeated the ghost in the end,
which gained him a lovely lady friend.

  6. It was a dark stormy night lightning bolts three times the average size, and fog like you wouldn't believe. Not many people lived there but some dared to visit. I was only there because I was offered extra credit if I made it back. What teacher would make u risk your life for extra credit?? Who cares I need it. So I went on into the scariest part of this place, some people call it the hole to nowhere because no one ever comes back and no one knows where it goes. I was scared at first but this tall man who appeared quite strong enough to knock down the biggest most heaviest thing on earth, protected me . He had powers like fighting off the ghosts that took these people to who knows where and made it impossible to be struck by lightning. So we went. It took us 4 days, but it was the best four days ever because he was so smart and so HOT :) anyways so he took me there and we took a picture and with his magical powers he sent me back to school and I passed my class with the help of the hottest man ever! The end :)
sorry this Is all I could think of.

No wonder why the classic Gothic novel was so difficult to understand. It might as well been in an entirely different language all together.

  8. One day I was sitting on the comfy chair watching TV on a dark cloudy day. I let my dog out before the rain fell. He was only outside for five minutes when I heard the worst yelp from an animal I ever heard. Assuming the worst, like my dog fending off a wolf, came into my mind. I ran outside and scanned the lawn, not a single creature was in site. I felt rain drops on the top of my head and panic washed over my body. I started to walk quickly down the gravel road, calling and screaming my dog’s name. A bit angry I felt towards him but I was more concerned. Whatever trouble did my little puppy find himself into now? As I started sneaking through my neighbors hard, harshly calling for Diggity, the rain started to pour. I ran and ran, here and there, pretty much everywhere for an hour. I screamed till my voice was no more and I cried a little. My dog was gone, lost, and possibly was ate alive. My best friend vanished. My head hung low, I walked towards my home. The rain stopped now. I slowly drag my feet up the porch stairs. Diggity was sitting there, waiting for me to let him in the house. I shrieked for joy and scooped my precious pup into my arms and gave him a big hug and kiss. We were both soaking wet, but I did not care. The clouds dried up and the sun pushed through the clouds. All was well again.
