9-11
Today is Patriot's Day. Eleven years ago today, terrible acts of terrorism were committed on people who were just going about their daily lives. Instead of focusing on the negative, however, I would like to focus on the positive. So many people went above and beyond what they thought they could do to help others. Helping those in need is one of the most rewarding activities a person can perform. What community service activities have you participated in where you have felt like you've really made a difference? Will you continue to perform community service once you've graduated?

I have been volunteering in AWANA since it started at Colfax. I know I have made a difference for some of the kids that attend. I can just be walking through the halls or around town and the kids will know who I am. I plan on continuing to volunteer as long as that night is still open after I graduate.
ReplyDeleteWorking with younger kids has really made a difference in my life, whether it was teaching them how to play basketball or just being there as a friend for them. My first year at Colfax I peer mentored some younger girls. When they would talk to me they were so happy and fun, but they would tell me some stories of their life at home and it made me realize that nobody should take life for granted. That was a big eye opener for me and I will continue working with children when I graduate.
ReplyDeleteI haven't participated in anything that made me feel like I have made a difference. I have done comunity service, but none of it felt meaningful. I think that community service is very important and I plan to continue to volunteer after graduation.
ReplyDeleteI don't really do much volunteering because i am usually so busy during school and I don't have much time. But last year, I helped out in the younger music classes every once in awhile and that was a lot of fun seeing little kids sing and enjoy having fun with music. I also babysit, that's not really volunteering because I get paid, but babysitting has really taught me to love kids which has made me want to continue working with kids in the future even when I graduate
ReplyDeleteThe first thing that comes to mind when I think I really made a difference is probably promoting FCA. I don't know if that is a community service act, but I feel like being able to talk about your faith to other people and having other people open up about theirs to you and a group is really rewarding on your part because you helped get them in there. I will definitely continue community service after I graduate. I like helping others and I just love having that rewarding feeling.
ReplyDeleteFor the past few years I have been a P.A.L. at Luther Park Camp. I would go there and for two weeks I would be a mentor for the other people there and helped out with cleaning and dishes. Not only was it really fun but also extreamly rewarding and a great way to meet new people.
ReplyDeleteThe best volunteer work I have done was last year when i worked in Mrs. Larson's fourth grade reading class. It was nice to have something to do every day that was for other people and i didnt have to worry about homework for that hour. I really ejoyed it and i hope that i will be able to do things like that in college and in the rst of my life.
ReplyDeleteI do volunteer work, but I don't really feel like I make a difference. It's not like I'm saving lives or making a huge impact in anything. I kind of just do whatever the head persons tells me to do and I do it.
ReplyDeleteAlong with Bailey I also have been a P.A.L. at Luther Park and I have loved it. The cleaning the dishes part was even fun which was really surprising. Being there to help mentor and be a role model for the kids younger than me was very rewarding. After I graduate I do plan on continuing community service.
ReplyDeleteI think many things I've done have made an impact. I've helped assisted living facilities and other places. I think the most influence I've had though has come from announcing basketball games because of how many people have been affected by it.
ReplyDeleteDuring the summer of my freshman year, I went on a mission trip to Milwaukee. During that week, I served food to the homeless and did yard work for people that could not themselves. The trip made a huge impact on my life and made me realize that I can make a difference just with little things. Throughout the school year, I also teach Sunday school. The pre-schoolers that I teach love to learn and whenever I teach them something new, I feel that I am making a small impact in their lives.
ReplyDeleteWhen I go to volunteer at the nursing home, I can tell how much they need someone there to talk to. They could talk for hours about how they survived the tornado or about when they were in high school. I went during the summer and I don't have much time to go anymore. If I have time after I graduate, I will go back.
ReplyDeleteI have done alot of various community service events. Some of those events include: roadside cleanup, cleaning the fairgrounds after the fair, volunteering at the nursing home, and showing Head Start kids around the farm as kind of a petting zoo thing. Even though I have done all of these I donlt thing that I have made a huge impact. I will probably continue to do community service activites after i graduate.
ReplyDeleteThrough Destination Imagination: Project outreach, I learned a lot about being a good role model for younger kids. I personally dreaded spending time with little kids, but at the end, we received a letter from a mother saying how much of an impact we had in her son's life and how thankful she was that we had started this program.
ReplyDeleteI have done volunteer work and community service.I feel that when I am volunteering, it is always because someone has told me that it will be good for college applications, or scholarships. I feel that takes away from the selflessness community service should be about.
ReplyDeleteI don't do alot of volunteering and what I do is not stuff that has a big impact. It is always nice to be able to help others though. After high school I think that I will still volunteer in my comunity.
ReplyDeleteSome community service things I have done includce cleaning up at the environmental site, volunteered as a crossing guard during halloween last year and helping local flood victims clean up their house. I do plan to continue volunteering after high school because it is worth it when you see how appreciative others are.
ReplyDeleteI help tutor kids during my free time. It is really rewarding and I feel like I am really making a difference. Once the kid finally gets a problem after trying to teach it to them for a long time, I feel as though I really accomplished something and impacted their life.
ReplyDeletei have done a lot of community service projects! I have volunteered at my church in many ways. as a drummer, in the annual rake and run, and during Sunday school. I also help at a local theater, work at the environmental site, help with various projects in the community including a homeless shelter, and visit children's hospitals. I love to make a difference! the reactions you get are always so rewarding. I will definitely continue to do these things throughout my life!
ReplyDeleteI havent done a whole lot of community service that is rewarding. The most i do is help Trevor with his pet shop or his petting zoo. So i guess thats a little rewarding because without me they wouldn't get anything done.
ReplyDeleteI've done some volunteering in several different ways, but I haven't really helped with something that made an impact on me. I hope to do more for just that reason. I want to both make and feel an impact.
