10-5

Today we are going to have an assembly on texting and driving from 10:30 until noon. In the past we've had assemblies on bullying and drinking/driving. What are your thoughts on these types of assemblies (which are actually lyceums - education in the form of entertainment)? Do you think that they change anyone's behavior? If not, what would change people's minds as far as engaging in these dangerous types of activities?

  1. I believe that these presentations have a affect on some people who actually care about their lives and care about the choices that they make. However, with some people, they don't care about taking care of their lives and watching a video on something like that is just another excuse for them to get out of class. I think the only way to change some peoples mind is to have something bad happen to them or a family member, then they will realize that they should think about theory choices. But, I think these assembly's are good, for the people who actually want to learn.

  2. These kind of things are slightly helpful. Most of the time they will not change the way people act, anyway. I believe that they would be more helpful to the younger children. They should focus more on freshmen and younger generations. Introduce it before they really start getting other opinions on it. Also their parents have more of an influence on them than any assembly that they would ever attend.

  3. I think that some people change, but very few. It's important to brign these kinds of things to everybody's attention. That being said, the people who do these things aren't paying attention or caring. People aren't going to change unless they want to. These people also have to think about it themselves instead of being told what to think. It's complicated, but I think the people who actually do these things just care that they're getting out of class.

  4. Honestly, I don't think they make an impact on that many people. I believe people are who they are and you can't change it. I mean maybe it will change people for a short amount of time, but eventually they will go back to the way they are. Some people will change if they want to, but in reality not many people want to change. It's mostly a waste of time because nobody is listening and nobody cares unless it directly affects them. Maybe I only think this way because I am really crabby right now, but at the moment that is my view.

I don't think that these assemblies changes many people's minds. I think that students are affected for a little bit, but not for long. People know that things are bad and they still do it. Honestly I think they are a of waist my of time because I know what is right and what is wrong. I think it might change only a few peole.

  6. These assemblies done really change people that much at all. If people are texting and driving now sitting on metal bleachers for and hour and a half listening to someone speak about it is not going to change thier actions. Maybe for a while it will affect how they act but I dont think it will onfluence them for long. The only thing that we think about during these is how much we dont want to be sitting on the bleachers!

I think that these assemblies do change people's minds and perceptions on such things as texting and driving. They had a chart that showed that drinking and driving has gone down significantly lately. This is due to presentations like this.

  8. I do believe that they affect people for about a week. After that though people forget that it even happened. When they bring an actual person in that it has affected, people will actually listen. I thought that today's lyceum was very moving. The girl was very strong for coming today to share her story and I am glad that she did.

  9. I believe that these things affect people for about a week. After that everyone begins to forget that it even happened. I also think that it has a much bigger impact when an actual victim of these things comes in to share their story. The girl at today's lyceum was very moving and I think that she did a very good job.

  10. I think that these assemblies do help. They show everyone the real life consequences of their actions when driving. The assemblies also let people, who think they are the best drivers, know that they can make mistakes too. The best thing to do is not distract yourself to increase those chances for mistake.

  11. Frankly, I like the assemblies. It's good to hear people's stories and the impact they make. Sometimes I wonder whether or not they actually make people understand, but I hope they do and I think the people who go up and do those programs are inspiring. They show and share hardships to try and make us more aware. They don't want us to have to go through it too.

  12. I do think that the assemblies do help people but only a few. For most students it's just a good reason to get out of class for a few hours and talk to your friends. I think that is interesting to hear people's stories and learn about what they have been through and what they are still going through because of it. They does these things in the hopes that it will change someones life or at least help them in the future, they already know that some student won't listen, but a few will, and thats better than nothing.

  13. I personally really enjoy these assemblies. They have meaning to me although I know that a majority of high school students make fun of them or dread them. Today's was especially meaning because there was a personal story involved. It was really touching and I was brought to tears multiple times.

  14. I really enjoy assemblies that are well put together like the one today. I don't think that the assemblies where we just watch a video have much impact on our lives.I think that when there is somebody that speaks to us that has personally gone through something tragic has a much greater influence on us students. Today I cried multiple times during Leann's story. I couldn't imagine going through that or even seeing one of my family members go through it. I'm so glad she and her family came in and told us their story. I hope they realize what an impact they had on my life.

  15. I feel the message that is being is sent is a good one but i dont think that it really changes anything. It may make them think about it a little but give that person a few days and they will be back to their old ways. I will say though that out of all the assemblies we have had in the past this one would be the most likely to help change peoples minds.

  16. I believe that some people are very set in their ways. These people might view texting while driving as a convenience. I don't know if a one and one half hour seminar will necessarily change their views. However, I am sure that some people will be convinced against distracted driving.

  17. I personally think that this specific presentation inspired a lot of high school students and made them think twice before they pick up the phone or do anything while they are in the car. Leann was really inspiring as well. She really got to me on a personal level because I now think twice before i have a pessimistic attitude. I know that people definitely have it way worse than me and i shouldn't be taking life forgranted.

  18. These assemblies are helpful sometimes because they make us all really think about our choices in life. Sometimes they are very boring or long and not too interesting. in the end though all these assemblies really do affect all of us.

  19. I think that the assemblies do make a difference. Even though all the students may not pay attention during them and some people think they are stupid, they still affect us. The assemblies may not completely change people's behavior, but they still serve as a reminder to us. We may not decide to change our lives after them, but at least we think about the message they bring.

  20. I really don't think that the assemblies change anyone. If someone drinks and drives or texts while they drive they probably won't change what they do. Some people will never try to be safer even when someone puts statistics that are very negative towards something right in your face.

  21. I personally think these assembly`s affect people at the high school. It seems as though everybody is awlays goofing around during the presenttions. Personally i have heard most of the stuff in these presentations, but i normally take away a thing or two also.
