Metaphysical Poetry
Yesterday we read "Valediction: Forbidding Mourning" by John Donne. Donne is one of my favorites (yes, I know that they all are!) because he gets us thinking about those deep, philosophical issues without slamming us over the head with them. He uses metaphysical conceits and unusual rhythm/sentence patterns in most of his work. He does that especially in this poem. What did you think of it? What conceits did you notice? Did you like the poem? Did you understand it? ;-) What are your thoughts? Let's discuss!

Um, I wasn't quite sure what to think of the poem. I thought it was kind of odd, but interesting at the same time if that makes sense. I thought it was wierd that he compared people to a compass. The major conceit that I noticed is that he was very sure of the comparison he made between the couples relationship and a compass. I didn't really like the poem all that much, but we have to read it so I guess I can pretend to like it. =) I kind of understood the poem, but than again I didn't. Um my thoughts are that we should totally not read these types of poems anymore. =) They are just wierd and I don't enjoy them at all.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Jadra 110%. I mean i'm not dissing your favorite poet Mrs. Myers, but i just don't understand him. The one thing i like about him though is he thinks out of the box. Maybe if i were to read something else that he wrote i would get a better understanding, but if you were to ask me what the poem was about yesterday i prolbably couldnt tell you because if i can't understand something it doesnt process. So i think we should read more by him, so i can get a better understanding of how he writes. :)

ReplyDeleteI don't really like it, I guess. It's kinda weird, and too deep for me. But it's okay. I mean, I sort of undertand it, I just would rather read about something more fun and interesting. But maybe I'll get it (and like it) more after we discuss it in class today.
ReplyDeleteI didn't really understand it, so I didn't enjoy it. I think it's something that you would have to break down by lines to really understand. I agree with Amanda that it's a little too deep. I enjoy reading the things that make more sense, or that we can relate to.
ReplyDeleteI thought that it was pretty deep. I liked it, but I wish I would have been able to understand it without Mrs. Myers walking us through it! haha. It frustrates me when I can't figure it out. I like his writing style and trying to pick out all of his comparisons. I also like how it does get you thinking. It makes you think about life and death and how we should spend our time while we have it. I liked his poems in all, but I think that I need to grow up a bit more to really grasp it and understand.

I didn't really like it because I didn't understand it. I don't know why people can't just write what they want to say because I am nor very good at reading between the lines. I agree with Hadra, I don't understand the compass.
