Change

"If life becomes hard to bear, we think of a change in our circumstances. But the most important and effective change, a change in our own attitude, hardly ever occurs to us, and the resolution to take such a step is very difficult for us." - Ludwig Wittgenstein

Let's talk attitude today. Has anyone ever said to you, "You need an attitude adjustment"? Do you know someone who is uncomfortable to be around because that person is always a "gloomy Gus"? Do you sometimes find yourself thinking that you need to change your attitude about a situation? Since you do have the power to change your life, and attitude is a BIG part of your life, is there anything that you would like to change (or are in the process of changing) about your attitude? Also, since you all plan on going to college in the fall (and that is a huge change), do you think that you will change your attitude about certain situations then?

Discuss!

P.S. This isn't supposed to be a super-personal journal, so please don't take it that way :-)

P.S.S. Personally, I'm trying to be more patient, especially when I'm driving. I tend to yell at the drivers in front of me.

  1. When I am having a bad day, people have told me that I need an attitude adjustment, and that makes me more cranky. There are actually quite a few people at school that make it uncomfortable to be around. I just try to avoid them for the day and hope that they will be better tomorrow. I want to change my procrastination thoughts because they will not get me anywhere in college. I wait til the last minute, but then I stress myself out and I hate it. I think that college will change us as people, socially and emotionally, even if we don't want to change. Two months from yesterday is GRADUATION!!!

  2. Charles Swindoll writes “Life is 10% what happens to you and 90% how you react to it.” I believe this is a very true statement. In any situation, a good attitude can go a long way.
Some times its tough to be around people who have crapper attitudes. It can easily rub off on ourselves. But I also think our postitive attitudes can rub off on others as well. Taking a bad situation and turning it around may not be easy, but worth it in the long run.

  3. Mrs. Myers, I agree with you about driving, but then when I think about it, I have probably accidentally mad another driver mad at some point. So, then I just try to forget about it and move on.

Also, I agree with Lucas. I have heard that quote before and believe it is so true.

And, when I am in a bad mood, I usually just tell people and say sorry in advance.

  4. Um yeah, my mom used to tell me that I needed an attitude adjustment all the time when I was younger. I was very naughty when I was little. Yes, I do know someone who is always saying their life is gloomy. I will not name names though. Yeah, I always find myself being really down about a research paper, but once I change my attitude and make the best of it they really aren't that bad. Um, right now I don't believe I can think of any reason on why I need to change my attitude because I am keeping pretty positive about everything. Yes, I think that I will change my attitude because it is a whole different world to adjust to.

P.S. I do that too Mrs. Myers, some people just don't know how to drive! =) I should work on that too.

  5. Sometimes I get really crabby, and just do not want anyone to talk to me. And when people ask me why I am crabby I just get more crabby. So I think that people should just realize bad days happen to everyone, and should not say they need a attitude adjustment. A lot of the times I get a bad attitude about school, and my mom tries to help me stay positive. Its better to stay positive in the long run :)

  6. I would like to have an attitude adjustment while i'm working at the nursing home. Sometimes it is really hard to keep a good attitude with really difficult residents there. No one has ever told me I need to have a better attitude there however I realize people living there need to be treated with the best care and personal and joyful one on one time. It's suprising how rude and demanding residents can be but they should never get any rude attitude back.

  7. My brother has always been a gloomy Gus. When he is acting all wierd, I think that I need to stop talking so much because I an getting on his nerves. I would like to have the kind of get-it-done attitude that I have been searching for for a long time. I think that when I go to college, I will change my attitude because it is a new environment and that will probably spark my attitude a bit. I will have to also be open minded.

  8. Well said Mr. Lucas Neuburg. LIfe is too short to be gloomy, plus nobody really wants to be around someone who is not fun.
Sometimes having a good attitude about things can even change the way people aruond you look at a situtation.
The main thing is to always be yourself and don't let friends or people dictate the way you feel about a certain thing. Life will be what you make it.

  9. I agree 100% with what Luke says about how you react to life is the type of person you are. I don't like to get angry towards people, especially in public, because I don't like that kind of attention. This is probably because I see and know people at school that are openly crabby, sad, ect. and I get annoyed by these people at times, so I don't want to be one of them. I wouldn't want to bring other people down just because I'm having a bad day, because that's not fair! Believe me, I'm not perfect and I have my moments, however they usually stay inside of me until I can talk to my mom or sisters...in private :D I'm so excited for college because you are open to so many possibilities and opportunities that are not avaliable during high school. :D

  11. When I get crabby I try to tell people in advance that I am in a crummy mood. I also try to avoid people that I know will bring up me being in a bad mood. I try to be with people that make me laugh. That usually helps me get out of a bad mood.

I have also heard that quote and completely agree with it!

  12. I totally understand what you are saying about driving Mrs. Myers!

Attitude is a major part of life. Sometimes things happen that make me unhappy but I know that it will only be worse if I dwell on it and make it worse than it is. If I'm having a bad day, I try to just keep it to myself. I don't want to burden other people with my bad attitude, just the way I don't want others to do it to me.

  13. Everyone has bad days and they are not that fun. But I agree with Luke that it does matter how you react to it. If you tell yourself that you will have a bad day, it's more likely that you'll just mope around and make it worse.
I guess I try to be more open-minded about things, but sometimes some things bother me. So I guess as far as my attitude goes, I'm trying to be more optimistic about things.
I don't like to be around Gloomy Gus people.

  14. I think that everyone needs an attitude adjustment every once in a while. Sometimes, I think people get so caught up with their problems that they stop seeing all the good in their lives.
I try to not let my problems keep me down, but sometimes it is hard. I always try to put on a smile, and then after a while, I find that I actually start to feel better on the inside. If I ever start moping around, I would want one of my friends to point it out because I don't want to be someone that is hard or uncomfortable to be around!
