Lydia's Journal

Please respond to the video that we watched. Place yourself in Gordimer's shoes, discovering and coming to understand the racial prejudices of Apartheid South Africa.

  1. I think that she must have been a very strong woman to put up with all of the discrimination. She was not raised correctly and that must have effected her also. Discrimination is hard to deal with especially racial discriminaton.

  2. I appreciated the way she held herself up against the racist beliefs of people. She was a very independent person.

  4. I agree with Alexa. She seemed to be a very strong independent woman who stood up for her beliefs. It would have been so hard growing up in the time and place that she did. As a child, it would be hard to understand why people did and felt the racial prejudgices that they did. And growing up, it would be difficult to stop those feelings to take root in yourself.

  5. Nadine is a very strong and confident woman for being able to handle all of the discrimination. She would have needed to be confident with everything in her life and she probably had to grow up very fast. She should feel great about herself for the steps that she has taken for herself and for the world.

  6. I agree a lot with Alexa and feel she is a very strong and open minded person. She grew up faster than I think she liked to. I think people greatly appreciate what she has done for the world. I really admire the way she stood up for herself.

  7. I thought she made a wonderful decision. I'm sure it was difficult for Gordimer to step outside of the barrier she was raised in. I was glad to hear her touching story and how color should not effect a person's character.

  8. It's weird to think that she didn't even know what racism was, yet she was living that sort of lifestyle. I, like everyone else, thought that she was a strong woman who stood up for herself and accomplished a lot in the process.

  9. There are always going to be people in our society that stand up for what is morally and truely right. Then there are people like Gordimer that go beyond the confines of the barrier and reach to not only theirselves but to others. I feel that reaching out to others is being the bigger person.

  12. I thought that it was really interesting how she never really knew what racism was or that she was racist until she got to college. I think that it would be a weird feeling to think that another race is less than you are. I have never felt that way, so I can't really relate to that, but if I had grown up that way, I'm sure that I would be the same as her. I think that it's really good how in America we teach our kids right from the beginning about equality of not only the races but also the different religions and genders.
