Yesterday once more, but different

The ladies have had their turn, now it's onto the men. If you could meet one famous man, dead or alive, who would it be? Why? Now write a story in which you meet that man. What do you discuss? What do you do?

If you could meet one famous influential woman, alive or dead, who would it be? Why? Now, write about an imagined meeting with that woman. Where do you go? What do you talk about together?

You are going on a picnic with friends. Who are you taking? Where are you going? What are you going to eat? Write a short story (it definitely can be fictional) in which you are going or are on a picnic.

Sorry, Jadra, another creative writing journal!

This one is titled: Neighborly and Unneighborly Neighbors

1. Make a list of items you would never lend to a neighbor, mixing the typical with the bizarre - for example, my car, my shoes, my left arm, my underwear, etc.

2. Write a piece in which you are asked and actually lend one of the bizarre items to the neighbor. Discuss the shape the item was in before you lent it and the shape it was in when it was returned.

Creative

Today we're going back to being creative. If you could be romantically connected to any celebrity, who would you choose? Write a story in which you and this celebrity are an "item."

Story

Let's try a fun story writing exercise today. I want you to write a story, but it needs to include at least five of the following ten items. The items don't have to figure prominently in your story, but they have to be in the story in some way. The story itself can be about anything: happy, sad, funny, scary, mystery, etc.

Here are your items from which you will choose:
1. hairdryer
2. cat
3. Ryan Seacrest
4. the batmobile
5. toothpaste
6. lilac tree
7. flag (any type of flag will do)
8. Barack Obama
9. clouds
10. liver

Have fun!

Again with the creative writing!

Today I want you to write a horror story/paragraph. Use your imagination and go wild. Where are your characters? What is after them? Is it human or not? What will happen to your characters? Scare me!

Creative Writing

You are a famous reporter. You've just scored your long dreamed-for interview. Write up that interview for me. Use sensory details.

Ex: William Shakespeare walks into the studio dressed to kill. His stockings are a brown worsted wool with pink paisleys. His overcoat has the same pattern as his stockings. His hair looks like it's been recently cut and he's chosen to trim his beard and goatee for the occasion. He smiles, says hello, and sits in the interview chair. I'm so nervous that I drop my interview cards. He bends over, ever the gentleman, to help me pick them up....

Get the idea?

Dictionary

Let's see how well you would have done if you had been Samuel Johnson. Try to define ten of the following words. Tell me what part/s of speech they are, give me the definition/s, and write an example sentence for each word. Be sure to think of ALL the definitions - including slang. Good luck!

1. friend
2. education
3. politics
4. love
5. chair
6. music
7. in
8. run
9. where
10. red
11. wrong
12. method
13. instead
14. cough
15. decide

Again Creative

Today you are a character from your favorite t.v. show or movie. Which character are you and why? Write a little episode where you interact with the other characters from that show/movie.

Creative

Today you are an animal. What animal are you? Why did you choose to be that animal? Write a brief short story in which you are your chosen animal. What happens?

Travel

This morning while getting ready for work, I saw the commercial for that dumb hot tub time travel movie. So, that inspired me with today's journal.

You wake up tomorrow morning and you're in the year 1968. The Vietnam War is going on; civil rights marches are happening every day almost; there are riots in the streets of big cities; it's hippie love and flower power on the West Coast. Creatively, imagine yourself in one of those situations. What are you doing? What's going on around you? Write a little story for me today :-)

Satire

Yesterday we discussed "The Rape of the Lock," which is a satire. Hopefully you remember that a satire pokes fun at something in society that people take too seriously (ex: Tina Fey's impersonation of Sarah Palin; "The Office" spoofing bad bosses, etc.). I would like you to try to write a satire today. You may choose any social issue or person that you want. You do not have to write it in poetry form if you don't want to do so. Have fun!

Creative Writing

In class, I don't have you writing a lot of creative papers. Mainly, I am having you write the types of essays and reports that you'll be writing in college. While it's great that you're honing your expository writing skills, sometimes the papers can be a little dry to read. Therefore, today I want you to be creative. Here's your prompt:

I want you to describe, in detail, a dinner scene. Who is at the dinner? What are they wearing? What does the place setting look like? Where is the dinner being held? What are they eating? (You don't have to answer all these questions. They're just to get you thinking.)

You can be as creative with this as you'd like. Stage the dinner anywhere, in any time period, with any type of "people" you'd like. Let your creative side out for fun!
