We are going to be starting a new unit very soon. In this unit, we're going to be learning about the many advances that were made in public health and sanitation, work conditions, and technology. Many of these advances were undertaken to help people who were struggling.
For today's journal, I would like you to write about a time you struggled. What were you having difficulty with? Who was there to help you? How did you overcome your difficulty? Or, maybe you were the person who helped someone who was struggling. What did you do that made that person's lot in life a little easier?

This is kind of a personal one Mrs. Myers. :)
ReplyDeleteI don't really know if I have ever had a time where I had a specific situation of difficulty.
It is more when I am having a bad day, or a bad week (or whatever) is when I turn to family and friends to help me out.
Overcoming difficulty usually works for me by just trying to move on, or fix the problem. It is usually just stress, and then I just get myself organized.
When others around me are struggling, I just try to be positive and listen. Smiles and hugs never hurt either. :)

Before my Junior year, I was really struggling on whether I wanted to run cross country or play football. I really wanted to do both sports. However, I knew my Dad wanted me to do football and he wasn't very happy when I told him I might quit, and I really did love football, so I decided to stick with it. Then someting happened that made my decision for me. In our first football scrimmage, I severly sprained my wrist and would be out for the football season. Both coaches (Mr. Doucett for Cross country and Mr. Dachel for Football) were really, really supportive throughout the whole process. Mr. Dachel made it clear that my decision to stop playing football was completely up to me and that I should do what is best for me. I have a ton of respect for him because of that.
ReplyDeleteI then ran cross country that year and improved a ton throughout the season to become a second team all conference runner.
The next year both coaches politely asked what sport I was going to do. The fact is, after the first cross country season, I realized that running stinks. However, I also discovered that anytime I lifted weights, my wrist killed me. What would it be like on the football field? The doctor did say that it would never be perfect. I decided to run cross country, and Mr. Dachel and Mr. Doucett were both once again supportive and encouraging.
Like Danielle said, this is very personal. I’ve had some struggles, that I would prefer not to display them to everyone, so I’m not going to.
ReplyDeleteThe best people to turn to for help are family and friends, sometimes I prefer to just keep it to myself. When I am struggling I like to talk to my sister. I like it so much because she doesn’t give advice, she just listens.
When somebody else is stuggling, I listen. Knowing that somebody cares enough to simply listen means a lot.
Haha...I would have to agree with the ladies. This is extremely personal. I have struggled with losing my Grandparents and I would definitely say that my Mom was my support system. She listened to me whenever I needed her and my Dad was my comic relief. Even though he had lost his parents he always made sure to make me smile! :) My Daddy is the best.
ReplyDeleteOlivia is probably one of my biggest supporters ever. She has helped me through a lot and I am here for her.
I usually can't keep everything in. I am a venter. I need to talk to people just so I can hear myself think straight most times.
I listen and try to give advice if I have been in that situation. Otherwise I just let my friends know I am here and that seems to be just as comforting.

I agree that this is personal, so I would say that my biggest not so personal struggle was my problems with my foot. After I broke it, it was so hard to sit through track season watching everyone else run. When I got my cast off, I struggled with the pain because it still hurt a lot. I tried my best to just work through it for two years, but a lot of times the pain was so bad that I hated running. It was hard to have something that you enjoyed so much turned into something that you hated. Of course, then I had surgery and had to sit out cross country. That was hard too since I had worked really hard over the summer to get in shape.
ReplyDeleteDuring this time, my family was my main support. They were always there to remind me to keep trying. And my friends were always there to keep me smiling. :)
I didn't mean this to be super-personal. I was thinking more along the lines of struggling with a class or a college decision. Sorry! I guess I didn't think this prompt through enough.
ReplyDeleteWell like every person before me I agree this is very personal. I have had a lot of struggles in life such as my parents divorce. They have been divorced for over ten years now but it's definetly still a struggle for me. Luckily I have great friends and family there for me. Alexa is always willing to listen to me! :) Mandy (my step-mom) and Kim (my dad) are also two people who i can always talk to no matter what. I am very lucky to have a close relationship with them. Having a great support system in struggles is essential. You can vent to them about anything and venting is a great thing! :)
ReplyDeleteBuh BYe!
I have not had to deal with any major struggle in my life yet. I am sure that there will be rough times in my life so I plan on keeping my family close to me and my friends close also. My mom has been there for all of the small things. I have talked to people who were having personal problems, but I am not sure if I made a difference. There is no getting around tough times. Those times will come and go throughout anyone's life, you have to control the situation and not let the situation control you.
ReplyDeleteUm, well I haven't really had a major thing in my life, but I struggle with little things like procrastination and dealing with stress. My mom helps me a lot, and I can always talk to her. She'll give me her honest opinion on anything, whether it be school drama or decisions about college.
ReplyDeleteIf one of my friends has a problem I listen to them and give them some advice. Same with my sister and brother. I hope my suggestions help them... :)
The biggest struggle that I have had to deal with so far is trying to figure out which direction I want to take in life. There are so many possibilities that it's hard to know which one will be the best in the long run. My mom is my biggest inspiration because she changed her major five times before figuring out that teaching was for her. My mom reminds that I don't have to have everything out right now. I always know that I can talk to mom or my sisters and they will give me their honest opinion. And of course friends are always great to have! :D
ReplyDeleteUm, well I know last year I definately struggled with all of the classes I had taken. I took a whole bunch of classes that required me to do a lot of work and studying and I did struggle during the volleyball season to maintain my school work. I did manage to get through it, but it was definately hard. I had all of my friends there to help me though along with my parents too when they could. I overcame this difficulty by focusing on my homework and getting it done on time and not procrastinating. =)
ReplyDeletewell i have been struggling a lot through my classes this year. i have been having problems at home, so my mind has not been focused on homework. i have been turning to the help of my friends, ecspecially for math class, and i also have been turning to my teachers. i used to seldomly get help from them, but when you're down you can't do it alone. the teachers and most of your friends are there to help guide you in the right way.
