Creative Writing

I was blown away by your journal responses yesterday (Sarah, I'm especially lookin' at you!) and how eclectic you are. That is so great! I really hope that we can come together as a cohesive group and enjoy this school year.

A fun creative writing journal for today: you get to "lie" and write about it. On a separate sheet of paper, freewrite on things you wish you had done or could do. Mix the possible (I wish I had visited the Grand Canyon) with the impossible (I wish I was Janis Joplin or I wish I could fly). Once done with that, begin a story, poem, or essay by claiming that you did do all that you said you wish you had done or could do. Example: "I published a book when I was thirty and it became an international best seller. After that I took up ballet and became an accomplished ballerina in only three weeks. I am appearing at the Met on Saturday." This is only a short example. Be sure your example is of a "healthy" length.

Have fun!

  1. Two summers ago my family and I traveled over the States in a hot air balloon. We landed in the soft white sand of Clearwater Beach off the coast of Florida. I spent my whole summer there and got as dark as a monkey. Toward the end of the summer I took flying lessons and was flying a plane in less than a month. I'm now 18 and my mom bought be a scratch off ticket. I won a free Cruz to Alaska for my whole family and I. When we got back I got sick for three weeks. Once I recovered I took my ACT and got a 32! Being sick actually made me smarter. Iwent on a series of shows for smart people, and won a bucket load of money. With the money I bought a time machine, and went back to when i tore my ACLs and i made my knees stronger so that never happened. I tretunred back to the future where i was smart, wealthy and had good knees. I went to a top D1 college to play basketball for two years, becuase I was smart so I graduated school in two years. For the remaining years of my life I flew myself around the world speaking of my great stories.

    i wish!

  2. For the first time in my life, I felt like I was soaring with the eagles. It was a strange sensation, this flying. I finally understood what it was like to be a master of the sky like they were. There was only one huge problem as I flew. I wasn’t really flying. In fact, I wasn’t even flying at all. I was falling.

No matter how much I had feared getting on board that plane, I got on it anyway. I never had been on an airplane before. To be honest, after seeing Snakes on a Plane, I never had the courage to do so. But here I was, sitting on this plane, shaking like a lunatic. According to the instructor, we were roughly thirteen thousand feet above the ground and that now was the time to jump. He also added that it was strongly advised that anyone who had weak stomachs should stay on the plane, unless they wanted lunch splattered all over their faces.

I, of course, decided to not stay on the plane. After watching millions of gory horror movies, I am pretty sure that I was one of those fortunate people that didn’t have weak stomachs. But that didn’t solve my problem with being so goddamn nervous. My fingers were shaking as I pulled goggles over my eyes and my heart was racing at a million miles an hour. Then the side door of the plane flew open and those ready to jump out were standing by for the thumbs up.

    And then we jumped.

My heart was in my throat now and everything seemed to be going by at lightning speed. Both of my parachutes had failed me, and all I could think about was how my life was going to end. I didn’t have much to think about as I continued to flail by arms about. There was only one way for me to go out now. Every single bone in my body was going to be crushed once it made contact with the ground. It would be a quick death, but boy was it going to be a horrid way to go.

The distant view everyone saw earlier on the plane grew closer and closer every second I descended. I had no idea why I was moving my arms up and down as the remaining moments of my life went by. Death was calling to me. But I continued to decline his invitation to leave this world. I still had hope.

All of a sudden, it seemed like gravity had decided to take a little vacation. I learned different when I let curiosity get the best of me for I had temporarily stopped waving my arms like crazy. The laws of gravity were still in action, with just one exception. Me. I did not see it important to argue with gravity this time around. I was safe.

Looking up, I noticed that the eagles were still there. I could have flown down to the ground without fear of Death returning so quickly. Something, though, was encouraging me to do the complete opposite of that. It was time to soar with the eagles – literally.

  3. Yesterday I went to the moon. While I was walking along the sandy beach in Normandy chatting with Audrey Hepburn, I became the crowned princess of Monaco. After the ceremony in the Taj Mahal, we skydived back to earth. Somehow, we missed our landing in Asia and dove into the Pacific Ocean. While we were submerged, we found a shark-proof cage and climbed inside. The only things we had to eat down there were crickets. I didn't mind. We must have been under for so long that we evolved into underwater breathing humans (without the appearance of gills)!

The next day, I was reunited with all of my loved ones in the clouds. I met a psychic that told me everything that would happen in my life. I am glad that I will someday turn into a scarlet flower. It was also nice to know that I will someday live in Chinatown with a good friend named Apple.

That night, I flew a plane over the Canadian tundra. I thought it would be a good night due to the fact that it was mostly daylight, just a slight dusk creeping in on the clouds and painting them purple. I got a first hand look at the northern lights as I soared near their atmosphere. When morning arrive, I studied the wolves in the arctic plains and witnessed flowers blooming one by one. I developed a language with the foliage and they told me all of their stories and secrets. Grasses, like people have parents and grandchildren...who would have known?!

  4. I plunged into the icy water, my lungs shocked at first then adjusting. Kicking my legs I swam deeper till I reached the rocky bottom of the ocean. I tentatively took a step, afraid at first that I would float back up to the surface, or that the ground beneath me would crumble. But my foot met the ground firmly and so I took another step and another. The water swirled around my face, and I noticed a school of fish darting in and out of my line of sight. Their playful movement quickly became frenzied as they rushed to escape the shadow that was looming down upon them. I watched in amazement as an enormous blue whale slowly made it's way past me. I wanted to follow it, so I pushed off with my feet and glided after it. I swam up until I began to see the sun filter through the water, it's light cutting through the water in streaks of gold. The whale's back broke the water's surface and continued upwards towards the clear evening sky. It was flying. Realizing that I could no longer follow it, I simply enjoyed watching float away, it's gigantic body blocking out what was left of the evening sun.

  5. I woke up today, and I thought to myself, "I must find something more." So I dived to the depths of the sea and rode on the back of a whale. I swam across miles of salty tears, but never found what I was looking for.
I stepped off the edge of a plane and I was falling, falling free. I was alive and terrified, but still I knew, "I must find something more." So I traveled to the desert and slept beneath the sky and even then I wondered why I could not find something more. I climbed to the peak of a mountain and I stood amidst the clouds. I lived on the streets in the city of dreams and fought to stay alive. I went to school, fell in love, lived my life, laughed and cried. I tore open the sky and drowned in the stars, immersed in the flames of the sun. I burned through the layers of questions that shrouded my mind, and still I could not find something more. Many days and miles later I lay beneath the shade of a weeping willow tree. It is weeping over me. my life has all but ended and I do not want to die, because still, I need to find this something more! But strength, it always fades, and courage, it never lasts. My body overcame my mind and my breath, it softly fades. And irony! I'm gone, but now it is here. Something more.

  6. I was about sixteen when I discovered my ability to control air currents. Shortly afterwards I became very interested in storms and the weather, and decided to become a storm chaser. As soon as I was needed I would go to the storm and face off against mother nature. I could turn tornadoes into calm breezes, and strong thunderstorms into nice cloudy days ( my favorite kind of day ). During my storm chasing days I also studied ancient history as well as astronomy.
I chased storms for many years when I finally met my ultimate opponent….Hurricane Hades! Hades was a massive hurricane heading towards the Gulf of Mexico with estimated winds of 750 miles per hour. I took on the hurricane and did all in my power to stop it. I was victorious, however I ripped a hole in time in the process and was sent back in time.
I ended up in ancient Egypt where the citizens found me and made me their pharaoh. I guided them for many years and taught them a lot about astronomy, as well as making it easier for them to farm and build things. One day a giant sandstorm threatened the city, so I decided this was maybe the only chance I would ever get to return to my time. So I once again challenge mother nature and returned to my time victorious.
Once I had returned to my home, I decided I would get a normal job so I could avoid all time traveling risks. Unfortunately that was short lived. I was on a trip to the Galapagos Islands when a giant wave came out of no where heading straight for our boat. That’s when I discovered I could take control of ocean currents and sent that wave back into the ocean. Here we go again!

  7. I awoke in the morning, groggy, and padded downstairs. As I filled a glass with water, I was surprised by a huge plant in the corner of the room. Then a crunching sound filled my ears as I stood, terrified by the strangeness of it. It was the elusive giant caterpillar, and my new pet. I cared for the giant creature as it grew and grew. After a few days it became a chrysalis. With each passing day I grew more and more impatient. Finally the day came when my butterfly emerged. It was a radiant purple that faded into an ocean of blue. As gas prices rose, I had little to worry about with my giant butterfly. We travled often, and when we were too tired to go on we would land on the clouds. I created a world up there, with the clouds shaping themselves as I pleased.

  8. It was 12:30 a.m. as I awoke from my dream within a dream. In my dream within a dream I traveled the world, by soaring like a bird, of course. I became an excellent writer and wrote millions of books. I lived with eskimos. I got a glimpse of heaven. I was a mermaid and lived in the sea for a good part of my life. I was also the first person to step foot on the moon, not Neil Amrstrong. After all the extraodinary journey's in my dream within a dream I decided to start living a more "normal" life. I got a 36 on my ACT and was accepted into the University of Dallas. After I finished schooling there and became a Midwife for a hospital I got married and had many children and got to be a stay home mom. I lived in my dream house in the mountains of Colorado with my family all living in a two mile radius. Thinking about all of this very early in the morning..I was beginning to realize, perhaps this wasn't a dream within a dream. Maybe it was just a dream? But, as the sun came up and morning became more clear, I realized it really was real life and I was only 17. I still had my whole life to live...

  9. I went straight to college after high school, not knowing what I'd be getting myself into. I tested out of all my general education credits and moved on to my career in the medical field. The things I saw during my clinicals could make anybody sick to their stomach. A man came into the emergency room with a severed hand and missing one of his legs. My stomach felt queasy, but I held through. After only two years of medical school, I graduated top of my class, when it would take most to finish the class in six years. Working in the emergency room was exactly the thrill I needed. A woman came in with a congenital heart failure whose heart had failed minutes earlier. Other doctors and nurses yelled for help while she was wheeled into the room. I grabbed the defibrillator and ran into the young woman's room. "Clear!" "Clear!" That word ran through my head everyday. Finally, the woman came to and thanked me. "It's all in a day's work, ma'am," I replied. I walked out of the room and sat down on a bench next to the window. Thinking to myself, I realized that I had just saved somebody's life. I looked into her room a few hours later and saw her heartbeat on the monitor next to the bed.

    I definitely wish!!!

  10. It was the night before my big sailing trip around the world. I was out on my boat "The Dreamer" making sure I would have everything i would need for survival or for emergency. When I had checked everything off my checklist, I headed back to the dock. I went home and had a good nights rest.
The next day was going to be a gorgeous day out. The sun was shining and there wasn't a cloud in the sky. I headed out to see, watching as the town waved goodbye to me. They wouldn't see me for at least a hundred days. That is about how long my trip will take (including time to shop around).
I was finally out to sea. I was going to every big city along the coast that I could think of or at least twenty miles from the water. I toured Tokyo, Las Angles, London, Cape Town, Rio de Janeiro, Miami, Puerto Rico, Anchorage, Mumbai, Sydney and so many more. The good thing was that there weren't too many storms that I ran across. The worst there I ran into was heavy rain, thunder and lightning. The good thing was that I was in a port when the storm hit land.
After I came back (with lots of gifts for friends and family) I was greeted with lots of cheers. I would go down in history (in our town at least) as a woman who sailed the globe.

  11. I was two years old when I joined gymnastics. After mastering everything in that sport, I took dance lessons at age four. I mad eit onto my school's dance team and we got first place at state! Traveling the world, I discovered my natural talent - cosmetology! Cosmetology is better paying than most doctor's jobs, which is lucky for me. I styled makeup for many celebrities and models. Funny thing, I just happened to see Erinn Springer and did her make up too! After high school, I went to basic training in Texas for the Air Force. I was loaded with money and decided to go to a college in Duluth, also where I lived. Oh, and did I mention I am the inventor of cheesecake? :)

  12. I woke up in the morning and decided I was going to go back out to Yellowstone. But, I decided to take my airplane out there instead of flying. Who wants to spend all that time in the car, and flying is more fun of course. When it got to the point that it was time to land, we decided to keep flying and go out to California. So we flew out to the coast. It was awesome. The whole time was spent out on the beach. I even got to swim with sharks out in the ocean. Now how many people get to do that? After two weeks gone, I decided it was time to go home, so I hoped back in my plane and flew back Colfax to catch back up with friends.

  13. Well I was about 5 years old when I started to train in Gymnastics. My dream was the gold medals in the Olympics. When i turned 14 me and my whole family moved to china so that i could have a better chance of being the best. Over there I ended up staring in America's Next Top Model thats when i started my TV career. At about 16 I felt the need to take on singing. Little did i know that it would take off so when. With in the next two years i was selling over a million CD's and getting awards. Everything was going so great i felt the need to star in the Hannah Montana series with my sister. There we met all the starts and it made sarah's day.
