12-14

We just got done reading the metaphysical poets. The metaphysical poets liked to make startling connections in their poetry using very descriptive metaphors called poetic conceits. I would like you to come up with two metaphors and use them in a poem about the holiday season. Good luck!

  1. Whats a metaphor?

  2. A metaphor is when you compare two dissimiliar items and you do not use "like" or "as." Example: The marshmellow clouds floated across the sky.

  3. Christmas is coming oh joy, oh joy.
Christmas is a two year old boy.
It cries and cries, complains and whines.
    Wanting everything in site,
Not being thankful for all the light.
Christmas should be a loyal dog,
givng and giving doing no wrong.
There would be forgivness, happiness and love.
That's what family and christmas should consist of.

  4. The snow is falling,
    it is so calling.
I just want to go sledding.
Just how the butter on bread is spreading,
Hard to get going at first,
Before you know it your just a burst.

  5. The snow is a blanket
    coming out of a faucet.
It is as cold as ice,
    its not very nice.
The food is a big old pie,
    making you want to cry.
You will be as stuffed as a turkey,
    after this holiday season!

  6. The food is calling,
    The snow is falling.
    It is that time agian,
    When good times begin.
    With moutians of food,
    and the cheerful mood.

  7. I am an icicle,
    freezing off my buns.
    The sky is a snowglobe,
with someone shaking it like crazy.
Snow days are a day in heaven.
I wish it was every day.

  8. Christmas morning is screaming my name
I want presents now or I'll go insane
Santa's cherry suit was here just last night
I hope my dog didn't give him a fright!
The diamond snowflakes fall in the sky
Christmas is here I think I will cry!

  9. The blanket of snow on the ground is amazing,
I tend to catch myself looking at it, gazing.
It is a refrigerator of cold,
but somehow keeps me warm like glowing gold.
The snow packed makes fun for throwing,
even with the cold wind blowing.
Snow mountains are all around from the plow,
the only think I can say to the size is wow.

  10. Snow soft as cotton,
    with gound on the bottom.
It is so nice to have on the holidays,
Better though on a school day.
Snow, white as a cloud, on christmas is the best.
It makes that day better then the rest.

  11. As I lay awake this Christmas Eve,
I can't help but wear my heart on my sleeve.
I turn my head and all I see
Is the ghost of what we used to be.
What once was bright is now broken and faded,
And I wonder if they see the same of the love they traded.

    Turn away from your ghost,
    Recreating what hurts the most,
    Look up in the air,
Of course, some mistletoe hanging there...
    An effigy hanging down,
Where suddenly in voices I drown.

They surround me replaying the scene,
Like a flashback on a movie screen.
And then I find the movie ending I seek
Just looks a little too bleak.
I stare away out the window and see the frost
Blocking out what I have lost.

So here I lay in my prison,
That only from my mind has risen,
Where all I can do is wait for the morning.
All of this came without warning.
Now I'd rather be out in the snow,
but here I am sleeping under the mistletoe.

  12. Being on Christmas break means getting away from school,
But will that turn me into a fool?
School is a book where everyday is a page turned and a new lesson learned.
Christmas break is just the break at the end of a chapter.

Time is the true universal currency.
We spend it doing different activities.
Some choose to invest in sleep,
    Some in education.
Others simply spend their "money" enoying life to the fullest.

We can even invest in an insurance plan, Insuring our time spent will not be in vain.
However you choose to spend your time,
Just enjoy it and make it worth it.

  13. The Christmas lights are the switch for my joy.
When I see them my heart begins to feel the warmth that is not around me.
The blankets of snow wrap across the land and string the trees with white.
The world around me appears happy to be seen.

  14. When winter comes
I look forward to glassy ice
and the sound of that gliding slice.
It seems odd that you can go on for hours
when just minutes ago you felt no power.
The sun shines bright while snow falls from the skies
and you hold tight to the flying minutes as they go by.

  15. Christmas is comming very soon
it makes me want to jump around my room
the joy of the season excited

  16. Cookies are the watch on my wrist.
Eating,as the snow falls, I can see the passing of time.
For what better way to view,
    the dimming of light.
Chocolate chip raisin is life itself, as it drowns in milk

  17. christmas is like a pear.
The excitement starts narrowly after thanksgiving,
slowly growing wider towards the middle of the season.
By the end it curves back a bit smaller as the big day approaches
and rounds out on christmas morning.
    It is like an apple.
glossy and red on the outside,
    drawing attention.
but cut it open and see the true meaning,
    the star.

  18. Kovu does not seem to enjoy Christmas
I'm sure he'd love to make Santa beardless.
My bear cat attacks the tree
And when scolded, purrs with glee.
Even with all the hate, I know
of the one thing he loves with a bow
is a can of tuna or some catnip
the grand turkey feast he would not skip.

  19. As snow lies on the ground
I fell like jumping all around
It seems like white blanket covers everything
And I’m not going to do anything
    Only lying on the bed
    Trying to enjoy the weekend.

  20. the snow on the ground covers like a blanket
its as if a flock of sheep have infested the town
when everything is drowned in white
i would rather be shot than go outside
Why go out side when I could just be
a toster strudel and watch t.v.

  21. I could write a poem about my holidays,
But to describe it and be completely understood is impossible.
    So whats the point?
    you see--
    My poem is a diary--
    Locked in are secrets.
You reading it is a fun house mirror.
Unless you've been in my shoes--
    And these ruby red slippers,
Have not and will not be tried on.
    Use your imagination--
Ice that throws cars in ditches,
    Snow plows waking you up.
    Eating cereal in bed,
    right out of the box.
    Family ignores you,
Like you have the chicken pox.
    No traditions.
Just memories of those that passed away.
Sitting with a piece of paper and a pen,
    Writing about things,
I wish would not have been,
    But no on will understand.
Because my poem is a diary,
    And locked in are secrets.

  22. You wake up to the sound of screaming close to the kind at JB concert
When you see your brother standing in front of the Christmas tree
Underneath, presents with perfect wrapping and lights shining on a lighthouse that are on the Christmas tree.
    I love Christmas <3

--This is late! I just remembered!
